Retaking in October: Study Progress Log

Postby lawyerwannabe » Tue Aug 10, 2010 12:06 pm

Received a 168 in June. Want to get into a higher ranked school with my 3.9+ GPA.

Going to be working my way up to the last of the PTs. I will be updating this somewhat frequently. Aiming for 170+.

Doing two sections from the LRB and corresponding Mastery sections from the Kaplan book tomorrow along with reviewing mistakes / questions I was not sure about from the four tests already taken tomorrow.

Will take a PT (timed and in realistic conditions) on Thursday, 8 / 12.

August 13:

Have been lazy and have felt "out of it" all week. Took PT 33 today.

LR1 = -4
RC = -4
LR2 = -1
LG = -0

Raw Score: 92
Scaled Score: 174

Made two painfully obvious mistakes on LR1 (misread stem and then didn't read the all the answers on the other).
Kind of disappointed in RC because I got -4 and only finished a minute early (normally finish section 3 - 5 mins early).
Probably should have gotten -1 in LG because I was unsure on one of the answer choices.
All in all, OK. Will review this tomorrow as well as do two additional sections in the LRB.

You're doing well! Your log is very neat :) I might steal the formatting for my personal one. Good job!

August 14:

The lazy and "out of it" feeling continues. Took PT 34 today.

RC = -1
LR1 = -3
LR2 = -4
LG = -1

Raw Score: 92
Scaled Score: 174

Thrilled about the RC score. Felt very comfortable and confident on it. Finished 3+ minutes early.
Made at least 3 dumb mistakes in LR. I thought LR2 was very difficult in general.
Still sometimes get one wrong on LG. Hopefully when test day comes I can get -0 like most of the PTs.
Also, I finished up the LRB today. Going to review that as well as the tests I have taken before taking anymore PTs.
I plan on taking PTs this upcoming Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

PT average/median score to date: 174

Pretty happy with it overall, considering there is still approximately 2 months until the October exam. Would, however, like to start scoring 176+ to have an outside chance at attending H.

August 17:

Took PT 36 today. Experimental section is from PT 21.

LR1 = -3 (finished 3+ mins early)
LG (exp) = -0 (finished 5 mins early)
RC = -3 (finished 2 mins early)
LR2 = -2 (finished 5 mins early)
LG = -0 (finished 2+ mins early)

Raw : 93
Actual: 173

All in all, not a bad test. The third LG game in the actual test took me forever (seating arrangement on a bus).
In LR1, I got three consecutive answers wrong. Two of them were really dumb.
In RC, all three incorrect questions were down to two answers (I chose the wrong one of course). I do not understand #10 though and still believe that my answer is better.
In LR2, I switched the answer to one of the questions from TCR to the wrong answer.

Hopefully, if I can eliminate 3-4 stupid mistakes on a test I can get my PT average to about 176.
I will review this test as well as the other tests up to this point tomorrow. I plan on typing out every answer that I got wrong on all the tests as well as any that I struggled with. Additionally, I will go through my notes on the LRB and LGB, compile those notes into a word document and add to the notes any insights I get from reviewing the tests (e.g. things to do better, things to practice, things to avoid, pattern in wrong answers, etc.)

Took PT 38 today. Experimental section is from PT 21.

LR1 = -3 (finished 4+ mins early)
LG = -0
LR (exp) = -1 (finished 4+ mins early)
RC = -1 (finished 1 mins early)
LR2 = -1 (finished 4+ mins early)

Raw : 95
Actual: 177

Very good day overall. Very pleased to continue to get -0 on LG and not miss many on RC.
LR overall was pretty solid (finished early, not many wrong). However, the -1 on LR2 was because I did not read all the answers and 2 of the -3 on LR1 were simply dumb mistakes.

Here's to hoping I can consistently get my PTs down to -3 or less!

And I know I did PT 38 a day earlier than I said. Not good at keeping to schedules.

Tomorrow will be a review day. Friday I will take PT40. Saturday will be a review day. Sunday will be an off day. :)

LR = -4 to -5 on average (would like to decrease to -1 to -3 on average)
LG = -1 on average (majority of tests are -0 though so I am confident)
RC = -2 to -3 on average (am very pleased with this but will continue to work towards my first ever -0!)

Took PT40. Made so many stupid mistakes. Hopefully, this was simply a temporary setback.

LR1 = -2
LG = -0
RC (PT21 exp) = -3
LR = -4
RC = -5

Raw = 90
Scaled = 169

It could have been mental fatigue. I do not know. However, I would say that 4 of the 6 I got wrong in LR were careless and mindless. Also, the 3 of the -5 in RC could be contributed to the same things.

All in all, I am not horribly upset with this test. If this is the bottom of the barrel, it is still a good place to be.

I am going to be taking PT42, PT43, and PT46 on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, respectively, next week.

Took PT 37 today.

LR (exp) = -4
RC = -4
LR1 = -4
LG = -0
LR2 = -3

Raw: 90
Scaled: 169

Second sub-170 score in a row. I am going to have to review my tests my thoroughly before taking my next PT.

PT 29 today
week 3 of PTs
Score: 168

Hmm just went from 173 to 170 to my original score (168).
I'm going to call it my "bottom" and assume that the scores will be on an upswing again.
Really want to start hitting 173 consistently!

Good progress OP.

The next PT I took was in parts and LG killed me (ran out of time for 11 questions - WHAT!)
and ended up with a crazy 163...super strange.

5 section PT today
PT 49
Score: 175

8) This is more like it :D

Are you guys doing these in testing situations? (a proctor administers the test?) Doing it on your own in your room/library will give you very skewed results (175 would realistically be a 168 or so on test day usually).

If you are (i know Kaplan will proctor a test whenever you want) then congrats! this is lookign great! you are going to kill this test. Keep workin hard till game day, it will definitely pay off.

Pretty sure my results aren't skewed by anything besides nerves on testing day. I've taken the LSAT twice before so I'm fine with it and taking it in a library around people gives me the experience of people coughing etc. I've practiced with a bunch of people taking PTs in a classroom and one of them kept time and told us to stop and put our pencils down. I'm not saying it doesn't matter at all but in no way is a 175 on a PT realistically a 168 on test day.

PTs in general can point to your range but we all pretty much know our range by now. I could score anywhere from 165 to 175 on test day. ONE PT is not about its predictive power. For me, I know I COULD score 175 but it's not likely. Doing it at least once on a PT just let's me "See" that possibility come true. Doesn't mean I'll get it on test day.

Anyways sorry if this came off all defensive lol.

I agree with JJ. Your PT scores indicate a range of where you can hit. You can hit the upper range, the lower range of the middle range. Usually the middle range, the average, is what youll hit. However, every test is different and you may get a "favorable" test on test day.

Good luck!

This is retarded. Library and proctored room are the exact same shit as long as you time it correctly.

Yep. Even if you don't have your wallet, you'll still be able to take the PT in those conditions.

Whatever, have you taken the LSAT yet? was your score the same as your "library" self proctored PT's?

My score was right in the middle of my proctored tests (10 of them) and i was 7 points higher on average when in the library, and yes i would always make sure i timed it correctly.
