How much did you improve after starting regular PrepTests?

Postby Anaconda » Tue Jul 27, 2010 12:28 am

I think most people will read the LGB and LRB and then move on to taking regular preptests (2-4 per week) until exam day. If my assumption is correct, I'm interested how much everyone improved after beginning to take regular preptests after they were done with "formal" studying. This does NOT include the gains from reading the LRB and LGB for the first time, only the gains from doing regular PT's and reviewing the mistakes (if that's how you roll).

I started doing regular preptests earlier this month and I've seen a somewhat inconsistent downwards trend.. I think a lot of it has to do with my choice of PTs. I did them in the following order: 8 (175), 17 (180), 32 (180), 34 (173), 36 (171), SPA (171), 41 (179). I noticed that for 34 and 36, I took a huge hit on the LG's section and even struggled to finish the last game (had to guess on #36's bus game). For the PTs that I score highest on, I managed to -0/-1 the LGs but for the ones that I scored the lowest on, it was something like -5/-6 per section. I hope this is just a result of the atypical difficulty of the mid 30's LG sections. Luckily though, I seem to have some consistency in LR and RC.

I guess the key is not to get discouraged by the LGs of the 30s :?

Here's my experience so far: Scored 161 on my diagnostic. Read LGB and practiced games from early PTs extensively. PTs thus far: 169 (Superprep A), 163 (PT 29), 169 (Superprep B), 163 (PT 30), 171 (Superprep C).

I'm 100% sure that the first 163 was an aberration; I was slightly hungover, which for me results in giddiness that distracts from anything meaningful (I know, I know, but I really didn't think I drank so much that I'd be affected the next morning). The second 163 was more worrisome, but there were contributing factors for that one, too: I took the test at a public library and a toddler ran off with my backpack. I let him go and didn't stop my watch because he wasn't getting far, but it distracted me for a good three to five minutes on LG, causing me to only complete three of the four games.

I'm hoping that 170 will be my new baseline and I can work up from there. I'm planning on reading the LRB all the way through, but I generally do well on LR (and RC), usually in the range of -0 to -3.

To those seeing minimal improvement: how much did you improve while you studied, and how many PT's have you taken?

I took a diagnostic, scored 143....little worrisome, but a little background: I'm a soc major, little to no philosophy/econ background, go to a brutal UG outside of the united states, no experience with any form of standardized test. Needless to say, our circiculum covers no logic and little critical thinking.

Took a few more PT's, hit a 153 on June 2007 but I had seen the games. Did the LRB and the LGB and got a 155, 161 then danced around 153-158 for a month before I hit a 152. These were on PTs 7-20...the games section was killing me, even though I practiced on these games I still never really got above -7. There was always one game I had to completely guess on, usually pattern and mapping games which I stink at still.

Anyways, I took 2 months off studying, pushed my test from June to Oct and started back up again on a regular basis. Scored 151 then 152 then a 158 the other day (haven't seen the games ever, so these are legit cold scores unlike my previous PTs where I practiced those tough games from 7-20 a month in advance). I just flipped through the rest of the games and they look like they're getting easier. Time is not my problem...I am good at LG, once I have a grip I very rarely miss more than one question.

I was going to start a new thread but I'll just post it here. I've REALLY learned to enjoy doing PTs. Sometimes you get frustrated obviously, but I'm at the point where I feel like I'm attacking the test. I've gotten really comfortable, and I understand the dynamics of the test, it's just a stamina and focus issue for me at this point. I was experiencing fluctuations in my RC section (went from -13 to -7) but on the last PT i got -4 and I'm really getting a feel for it I think. I'm excited because I know the games get a little easier as I approach the newer tests...and LG is my strongest section.

So yeah, in short, the PTs helped me out bigtime. Don't forget to review though!

Did LGB and LRB, then moved onto the Preptests as you stated in the assumption. My diagnostic cold was a 148, which I was a little worried about, but then again when I took it I didn't even know what was on the LSATs. After doing the bibles I took 2 preptests spread a couple days apart and got a 156 on Preptest 40 and a 159 on Preptest 1. So with two months left, hopefully I can continue to attack my weaknesses, assumption/inference/parallel questions and Reading Comp and crack the low 160s.

In early may, I took a month-long PR course. I diagnosed at 160 and was scoring between 168-171 by the end of the month. Probably did 5 or 6 prep tests in that span of time as well.

Afterwards, I decided to forego the June LSAT because I didn't feel ready. I took 3 weeks off and started to read the bibles late June and early July. After going through the bibles, I took my first PT in a month and scored 175. Since then, I've been doing a PT every 3 days, scoring between 171-180. So yeah, I think the biggest part of my improvement came from intensive bible study as well as a more focused approach to the LSAT.
