"Retake?" thread #108231

Scenario: I've already been accepted to Tulane from last cycle. Deferred for a year (non-binding). Looking to get a higher ranked school with better job opportunities. My realistic goals are top of T14, Bostons, GW, U-Wash, Fordham. Dream school is UVA.

Scores: 161, 165.
Gpa: 3.42

First test I didn't take seriously. Second I did. I took about 30 PT's. My average was 168-172 under exact test conditions. I came back with a 165. I'm a bit disappointed. I felt entirely calm during all of the LR. I freaked out a bit during the last LG. I also didn't do as well on RC as I normally do. I think nerves played a minimal roll, I just didn't do as well as I normally do for some unknown reason.

I think if I raised it a few points (even up to 168), I could seriously improve my chances at T20-T40. As it stands, I'd probably have to blanket the T20-40 and pray. The only reservation I have about retaking is the the fact that it wouldn't allow me to apply right when apps open, as I was planning to do.

Thoughts?

Sorry that I can't directly answer your question, but was your acceptance at Tulane from the 161? Also, are you a URM by any chance? Thanks!

This is your best bet since none of those schools are a lock. You could always apply to all of them, and then hold your apps to the schools you REALLY care about getting into until your new score is released. That way your spot is held in the app line and you don't risk a non-reversible rejection from your top pick.

So if submit my apps Sept 1st and ask them to hold onto it until the October LSAT, they hold my spot in the application line? That would be the best of both worlds.

Also: I did get into Tulane with a 161 and a 3.4. I'm a non-URM with no big softs (law internships, straight out of UG, white).

Added poll.

I say retake if you were hitting 172. Even if you get a 167, all a sudden your chances go from 40% to 60%+ for a lot of those non T-14 schools.

If you're willing then I say definitely retake.

Thanks. Leaning towards a retake too.

Anyone have any advice on when to begin studying? Because I seriously studied for 3 straight months, I'm hesitant to do that again for fear of burning out. Maybe 2 months would be sufficient after a nice break of a month or so?

Taking a month off to relax and reload sounds pretty good. You can definitely burn out if you don't take time off and relieve some stress. I don't think I've ever read a post on here advising people to not rest after scoring high on PT's but getting a disappointing score. Perhaps you simply burned out by test day?
