Did Anyone Complete More than 20 PrepTests?

Postby MagnumLifeStyle » Thu Jun 10, 2010 7:09 pm

Did your score gradually improve over time?

If so, did you spend a lot of time carefully reviewing why you got the wrong problems wrong?

Or did you simply brute-force through the PTs (without reviewing much), and LSAT simply "click"?

If your score didn't improve, what went wrong?

I've finished 3 PTs and my scores were remarkably consistent despite careful review of my mistakes (4 to 5 wrong in Reading Comprehension, 0~1 in Games, 10~12 in Logical Reasoning), which frustrates the hell out of me.

I plan to finish many more PTs over the next couple months, and would really appreciate any feedback from those who've chosen a similar preparation path before.

Thanks! =)

It takes substantially more than 3 PTs to see real improvement. You should definitely go over your mistakes, I found it very helpful. Also, your prep strategy should consist of more than just plugging and chugging PTs. You should focus on specific problem types that are giving you problems in LR, as that seems to be your biggest short coming. Also, review strategies for RC sections.

It's normal when first studying to see little increase, and actually many people initially see a decrease. This happens because one learns new strategies that are often somewhat time consuming during the test before they're refined and incorporated into one's test taking more efficiently.

You're still very fresh in your preparation, don't be discouraged.

Mind you, I haven't gotten my score back yet from the June test (my first time), but I can at least tell you my strategy that seemed to work for me.

I took a cold, timed diagnostic in December 09 and scored a 147.

I got my January refund from my scholarships back on January 4th, and ordered every book imaginable. LGB and workbook (plus flash cards), LRB, Kaplan, PR, and countless and individual PTs.

I knew my weak spot was primarily LG, so I spent the entire month of January reading up on LSAT test strategies and spend a lot of time focusing on LGs (while still reading over RC and LR) and completing (and purposefully) bypassing the WS.

Then from February until the Friday before my test, I took 4-9 PTs a week depending on other committments (I will a full-time student, part-time worker, and was also campaigning for a guy running for Congress).

Only once or twice a week did I go over my answers. To account for careless mistakes, I would write the question type next to each question I missed. If I found I consistently missed the same type of question, I would go back to my books and read up.

Once I found that I was missing the same type of questions consistently (for instance, I initially had a problem with inference questions), I would look at the correct answer and see that I kept picking the "second best" choice. Once I knew what the second best choice for that question stem would look like (by reading the books), I was then able to avoid selecting that answer.

I took 3 fake tests via Princeton Review book (and their online diag.). I got a 156 on the online diagnostic (didn't know how to logic games at all). Worked through LG bible, started doing individual PT's. Probably took 20-25 PT's total (not counting the PR ones). Started in the high 160's, ended up with a median PT score of 174, regularly scoring 175 +. Saw most of my improvement after I started aggressively drilling games (for my money, aggressively working on the sections you're bad at is more important than doing lots of PT's once your get your timing down).

Bottom line: You can definitely see improvement (especially if LG is your weak area), but it takes time and work. And I don't think you want to take the LSAT until you can consistently score in the range you want -- nerves can become an issue for anyone on the big day.

Thought I haven't gotten score yet from June 2010, I can already say I wouldn't consider taking an LSAT without at least 15 PT's under my belt.

JWicker10 and cdunn,
thanks for your invaluable advice.

cdunn, how do you feel, or how did you feel after you finished the June test? Do you feel pretty confident that you will get 170+, or even 175+?

So how many PTs did you finish? I know you said "countless," but did you finish over 20, 30, or 40?

OP, many people do at least 20 prep tests. I did probably about 20 or so as simple tests, maybe 10 or so broken into indiv. sections, and maybe 5 broken down into ind. questions. In fact, I'd bet most of the frequent posters on this board did. But if you think that going one by one through prep tests, even going over mistakes, is adequate, you will simply be wasting a limited and precious resource.

I highly suggest you look into conceptual stuff through the use of books or a course. LR is easily fixable. I usually missed 6 a LR section when I started as well, but I'm down to about 2 or 3 now.

Finally, nobody will make huge gains by just doing 3 practice tests. If you were under the impression that you would, you were sorely mistaken. You should not be disappointed. You're starting at a great place, and by following some of the study systems on this site, you'll be fine.

Oi vey.

I felt confident going into the test (which probably helped greatly - who knows how badly I would have done without feeling so).

I was averaging in the high 160s on my PTs. I'd do really well or have a PT with a forgiving curve and score in the 170-173 range and then could "bomb" a PT for whatever reason and score in the low to mid 160s.

However, the June LSAT was, how do you say - a bitch.

My confidence is nowhere in sight.

mst,
thanks for your insight.

I had already gone over the PowerScore bibles for Logic Games and Logical Reasoning a couple times, and also created a very useful outline of all the game types that appear and how to solve them (assumption negation technique, for ex).

I now recognize my hubris of thinking that by the 3rd PT, I'll be scoring 173+.

thanks guys.

I took about 35 practice exams and rocked it the first time. Its the best way to do well on the exam.

Just took it this past June (3 days ago...although it's felt like ages), so i'm waiting on my score. In 2-3 weeks I'll try and remember to post here, or you can PM me, and i'll let you know what I ended up with.

Hey good luck studying! I completed about 35 PTs and reviewed all the wrong answers after I took a test. Before PTing I did the Bibles cover to cover (helped a ton). Doing PTs for me helped the most in the games, seeing patterns and diagramming. Also, you start to understand how LR stems work ect. I would say do the most that you can do in the time you have but if you feel burnt out don't be afraid to take a day or two off, it really helps. Don't feel guilty, just do it. Sounds like good advice to me, ask me again in about two weeks to see if I feel the same way

No problem, I'd say at least a dozen more PTs, minimum.

I took more than 20 PTs, and my scores went down after reading through the two bibles, but then went up higher than ever after a while. I didn't regularly get into the 170's till the end of my prep (as in two weeks before). Stick with it!

This is typical of many people who start using new methods, whether it be through books or prep courses or techniques. You suffer as you implement the new methods but eventually you work them in and they tend to pay off.

My first score was 151
My next 9 PTs were all 158-160
Then My next 6 were 162-164
Final 7 were 167-174

It just takes time :)

Knockglock,
sorry to hear that!
What happened? Was the June Test much harder than the most recent PTs you had completed?
I was predicting that you would especially score 175+

Just dropped the ball hard on LG, and didn't do well on RC.

-2 LR -4 LG -4 RC -0 LR.

ugh :(. I don't know what happened really. Test day nerves must have gotten to me much more than I had thought.

it looks like we're starting out about the same. I just finished the bibles about 2 weeks ago and have been going through PTs like crazy for the starting test. My numbers have been about -2-5 on RC, -0-2 on LG and -4-6 on each LR section.

Don't even worry about timing yourself now though, just work through the LRs especially very slowly, concentrating on the structure of the problem. I can already begin quickly noticing logic errors/logic structure and prephase the answer fairly accurately, which helps tremendously. Whenever I miss 5-6 on a section I usually just agonize over it a little, cry myself to sleep to thoughts of becoming a janitor, then wake up with a clear head and get -2-3 on the next LR.
