Any crazy people out there retake an LSAT in the 170s?

I have a "friend" who's thinking about it. He did substantially better on his PTs and wants to retake.

After studying so long, I also think he has this in regards to the LSAT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome

no if you get a 165 or above you would be hard pressed to wanna retake especially if the law school you want to go to averages. Just a thought.

I don't think that there's a huge marginal utility in LSAT points past 174ish, but I base that only on the obsession that's kept me awake nights and on this forum days for the last 9 or so months. What could I possibly know?

I'm most probably retaking my 170, even thought it was about my PT average.

So, is your plan to try to kind of guess how well you think you're doing on the real thing and then cancel if you feel you didn't do better than your 170?

It would megasuck getting a lower score.

If I feel that I bombed it I will cancel. If I get a sub 170 I always have a third attempt to redeem myself on. But neither is plan A, of course.

I retook an LSAT in the low 170s & did better the second time around. I wouldn't have done it if my first score wasn't significantly below my PT average and if I hadn't had other mitigating factors that made me think I would do better in September.

Well, I would have retaken anything under a 175. I suppose that still qualifies me as crazy.

Well, I retook a 176. But only because I teach for a test prep company.

Well, and that old score was getting kind of, you know, old. If I actually want to apply to law school, I need something fresher.

If you were at 170, would it be a good idea to go through with a cycle then retake the June before 1L to see if you do significantly better? Obviously only if you got shut out at the T10 school of your choice, and probably a dick move, but would it work? Or if you scored lower, could there be repercussions for the current school even after a seat deposit?

A 177 out of 180 is fabulous! I would LOVE to score a 177 on my June LSAT. I mean, it wasn't your desired score but congratulations!

Thanks... I definitely feel fortunate to have gotten the score I did. I'm frustrated only because I always hated RC and, therefore, did not study for it adequately. The test was going quite well until I got to the fifth section--my favorite RC. I got obsessively tangled up with a few questions and was left guessing on the last 3-4 questions.

Regarding LSAT Stockholm syndrome, I definitely have it. I'm taking it for the 4th time, Cancel/166/166. Averaged in the 170's on pt's, but obviously that doesn't mean anything. I'm eligible to take the June test and I feel like it is the best chance i have of getting off waitlists at my top two choices. I actually kind of enjoy the studying this time around.....I'm probably losing my mind.

Where you are in the 170's makes a big difference. There are real gains to be had from going from a 172 to a 180. However, going from a 177 to a 180 isn't going to do too much for you.

I'm not going to, but I would like to retake the LSAT just for shits and giggles. I'm curious what effect being rusty would have on my score. For my own knowledge I'd also like to see if my retakes would fall within the score band LSAT reports. I took the February test too so it would be nice to take a disclosed test.
