I don't undersand why clarification of (E) is more important than clarification of (D)

Well, does it matter if it's more or less pronounced in dogs? Whether it was or wasn't as pronounced, the point would stand -- people are more likely to remember weird behavior and associate it with said earthquake, even though it could be coincidental.

(E) however, is important, because if there is a *specific* kind of unusual behavior that is predictive of earthquakes, then this puts the argument into question -- sure, some dogs behavior oddly at any given time, but what if the odd behavior predictive of earthquakes is only common before earthquakes?
