Off the top of my head:

Tortoise's first album
Album Leaf - In a Safe Place
Steve Reich
Bembeya Jazz National

I do best with silence though. If I have to use music to drown something out I need it to be something I can ignore. Tortoise is really the best study music.

The battle song from "Gladiator." I'm not kidding.

Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor, the adagio.

Anything by Chopin or Beethoven.

Before finals, for luck: Seasons of Love from RENT.

Props for Explosions in the Sky. I wish they could top "the Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place" but don't think it'll happen.

Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky are great as mentioned.

I'm also a fan of anything Lisa Gerrard (Gladiator and Man on Fire Soundtrack especially).

Some other random good stuff:

-Master and Commander soundtrack
-Remember the Titans Theme
-The Island Theme (Steve Jablonsky)
-Reflections of Earth, and Tapestry of Nations from the Millenium Celebration
-Most of John Williams stuff

An instrumental piece of music is not called a song.

Leaving nitpicking aside, my favorite piece right now is Verklarte Nacht by Schoenberg.
Shostakovich's symphonies are pretty suitable for keeping me concentrated. Otherwise, Rachmaninoff's piano concertoes will do. Classical stuff is too sweet.
If you count operas, then L'enfant et les sortilege by Ravel is one that I listen to for fun. The Chinese teapot song is just epic
When I want something different, string quartets and orchestral pieces by Bartok really arouse a different mood. Webern's orchestral pieces are sophisticated.
If I need dance music, Stravinsky's ballets are more than enough.
Sometimes my mind requires some moments of romance, so Debussy, Ravel's orchestral music generally will do.
For solo music, its hard to beat those French composers' piano pieces. Bach's cello suite is pretty good but sometimes feels a little monotonic.
I used to listen to Gershwin's music, but I find his music too pictographic and hence too distracting. :?

Pleasantly surprised at the amount of EITS fanfare ITT. They're probably my favorite band ever, and yet no one I know has ever heard of them.

I wrote a 24-page M.A. research paper in one night, running on only coffee and EITS. I don't think I could've done it without EITS.

Seriously.

This is almost as inspiring as Boobie Miles.

Explosions in the Sky is TCR. Also Ludovico einaudi is good piano music.

My go to pre-exam song for all undergrad was "Death is the Road to Awe" by Clint Mansell from The Fountain.

For 1L exams I listened to "Impossible Soul" by Sufjan Stevens

Didnt bother reading because I'm at work and too lazy to do it, but if it hasn't been mentioned yet:

Vitamin String Quartet is what I usually listen to while studying. Their quartet covers bands from The Beatles to My Chemical Romance. Basically most of the bands you like will have some songs covered by them. It's nice to have the music drown out the ambiance, play familiar songs, and not be distracted too much due to the lack of lyrics.

Anything by a band called Animals as Leaders, some of the most amazing instrumental guitar playing out there (He uses an 8 string). The music helps me really focus.

I'll do a shameless plug. Friend from high school has a pretty good instrumental rock band. You can stream it all for free here: --LinkRemoved--

Their first album, Paper City, is really good imho.
