cancel my feb lsat score?

Postby lawwschool » Sun Feb 07, 2010 10:12 pm

took the feb 10 lsat. 2nd time taking it, first score was a 163. ivy league grad, 3.6 gpa, have been working at a major investment bank since college.

felt pretty good except i bombed the lg section, just got thrown off by the time suck in the first game that threw me off for the rest of the section. definitely ended up guessing on atleast 9/10 of the questions in the lg game.

want to get in a T10 law school so was hoping to get in the high 160s to average out atleast a 165/166.

should i cancel?, retake for a 3rd time? or just try to apply with a 163?

You will not get into a T10 with a 163/3.6. Make whatever decision you want.

With a 163 / 3.6 it is highly unlikely that you will get into a T10 school, unless you have URM status. I think you would need at least a 168 to have a decent shot, and that would be for the lower T14. Except for HYS (and perhaps CCN) schools will take the higher score when considering your application.

How have you been PT-ing? What do you mean by "felt pretty good" on the other sections - do you mean that you think you got all of them right, or just the regular amount that you always get wrong?

If you really think there's no chance you scored at least 165+, I would suggest that you cancel and go for a retake.

I usually PT around 165, but i usually PT lower than what i would score on test day. i think i averaged 3 wrong per section except in the logic games where i could have easily gotten 9 wrong.

if i cancel and retake a 3rd time does that look worse than if i try to apply with a 163?

If you get a higher score the 3rd time, 163 cancel 165+ will be much better than just a 163. A 163 / 3.6 is not going to get you into T10, or for that matter T14.
However, 163 cancel 163> is going to look worse than just a 163.
I find that most people, myself included, usually score lower than their PT average... even though I usually do better on the actual test day, and I do well on standardized tests, I found that this was not the case for the LSAT. If you've been having an average PT of 165 while studying for the past 2 LSATs, unless you're confident that you will be able to score higher than this on your third try (you feel like you still have room to improve, you haven't used up all of your material etc) you might need to look at schools outside of the T14.

I'm also a 163er (with a lower GPA) who re-took the LSAT a few days ago. Also hoping for and am capable of a high 160s score but was thrown off because of the difficulty and placement of the LG. For what it's worth, I was thinking of canceling as well but I feel that the ease of the LR and RC on this particular test probably outweigh the difficulties of the LG. This, with a -12 curve or so, and maybe a correct answer or two on any LG guesses and it is likely you can get the kind of score you want. I don't know exactly how you felt about the test as a whole, but you can always take it a third time if necessary. I would wait it out and see what you get.

If you flat-out guessed on 9 LG questions and usually miss 3 questions on the other sections, that's potentially -18 right there. That's a 164-165.

You have to make the final call. But if you are applying next cycle, I would recommend canceling, studying your ass off, shooting for a 170 in June.

I would evaluate how you felt during the passages/games. Did you guess? I had to guess on the third game and the entire dual passage so I cancelled. But if you felt you did well, then don't cancel. But I don't have a previous score, so my record would only be "cancel-165+" (here's to hoping). In your case, it would be 163-cancel-? so you may want to think about that.

Unless u just random bubbled half the test I would not cancel. Curve on the last LSAT was minus 14.
