Schools that Pay for you to visit during ASW

Post by Kretzy » Tue Dec 08, 2009 11:08 am

With ASWs starting in just a couple of months, we should start a list of schools that will pay for you to visit them, and what the terms are. Add things below and I'll continue to update this post. I started the list with UVA.

Please remember, this is a rough list. Any confirmation/clean-up would be really helpful. Post below or PM me :)

Schools that Pay/provide reimbursement

All Admits, with amounts:
Harvard: Travel stipend, between $150-$200; all admits.
Stanford: Travel stipend, $400 (outside CA), $200 (inside CA); all admits.
Chicago: Travel stipend, $200; all admits.
Virginia: Travel stipend, up to $400. Full amount based on geographic proximity; seemingly given to all admits.
Penn: $100 if you live in the northeast, but up to $200 if from outside the northeast. They request you use "discretion" in asking for the stipend only if you have financial need; all admits.
Duke: Provides up to a $150 airfare reimbursement for all admitted students.
Vanderbilt: Travel stipend, up to $250; all admits
WUSTL: Up to a $200 reimbursement if you live over 100 miles away; (maybe) all admits, not just for ASWs.
Minnesota: Up to $300 for out-of-state students.
Wash & Lee: Up to $300 for out-of-state students.
Case Western: Up to a $200 reimbursement; all admits.
Michigan State: Travel stipend, up to $350; all admits.

Some admits
Columbia: Up to $200 for students who can demonstrate need. Requires a form be filled out and approved, along with airline receipts.
Berkeley: $300 (outside CA), $150 (inside CA); given to certain admits via phone call/email.
Lewis & Clark: Some admits receive up to $400; awarded in the acceptance packet.
Cardozo: Unknown amount to certain admits.

Only scholarship recipients
Michigan: Darrow Scholars get up to $500 to visit campus.
Alabama: Full airfare and lodging; for those receiving significant scholarships
Chicago-Kent, IIT: Full airfare and lodging; only for their full-tuition scholarship finalists.
Pacific-McGeorge: Full airfare; only for scholarship recipients.
Mercer: Full airfare and lodging; only for scholarship recipients.

Only for those who end up enrolling
Iowa: $200 deducted from travel expenses if you matriculate.
Pepperdine: Up to $400 in travel expenses are deducted from your first tuition payment if you enroll.

Schools that hate us poor applicants and make us pay our own way
NYU
Michigan (also see above): Travel is up to us to figure out, and if we want a shared room it is $20/night.
Cornell
Northwestern
Georgetown
Boston College
UIUC
Temple
Loyola-Chicago
San Diego

Haha, excellent! I don't have anything to really contribute yet, but I'll be watching and adding once I have news.

Does Virginia require you to enroll if you accept the airfare assistance?

No, but Minnesota only reimburses you if you end up enrolling.

McGeorge pays airfare if you are awarded a scholarship.

Mercer pays airfare (or driving reimbursement), hotel, and food if you are awarded a scholarship.

Does anyone know about BU or BC? I don't remember seeing anything in the BU admissions packet thingy, and don't have the AS site password handy...

Michigan says that travel is up to you, but depending on availability, they'll be able to put up some attendees at a reduced rate of $20/night (probably will have to share with another admitted student, and they can't offer that for you and a guest--just you).

I found all these in another thread (http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... =8&t=57575):

-Duke gives up to $250 for travel.

-UIUC will give a 250 deduction off your 1st deposit to "reimburse" you for your travel expenses.

-WUSTL, up to $100 I believe.

-Michigan State also gives travel stipends of up to $350.

-Pacific and Penn State offer reimbursements for travel expenses (no amount given in thread)

-I talked to BC today and they don't (quote from thread, Feb. 2009)

-Case Western acceptance package says they reimburse $200 for travel

First off, thanks for doing this thread. Second, do you have to ask for reimbursement or do they automatically give it to you?

I spoke with Nick Wallace at Minnesota Law today. He told me they would be helping pay for me to visit, but I don't know if this means all applicants will get it or just scholarship recipients. I'll hold off on updating UMN until I get my envelope.

Hi. I just responded to your PM, but to clarify for anybody else: I'm pretty sure you have the option. They fly into Atlanta, though, which is about 90 minutes away, and you take a shuttle service from there.

I recommend that applicants drive for school visits when they can--or rent a car if they fly--to be able to check out the surrounding areas and maybe look at some apartments/housing options.

Anyone have any idea if Vermont Law helps out anyone with travel? I live in SC so it's quite a hike to get up their and I got 25K a year scholarship (but their tuition is 40K a year) and I want to check it out but really can't afford airfare/hotel right now.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
