And I have my own rankings based on post-employment outcome (i.e. starting and median salary), average student loan debt, and LSAT score (Berkeley has a middling 167 median).

Yeah, I was 32 when I graduated and no one wanted to hire me because I was too old.I<3ScholarlySweets! wrote:5 years would be too much because I think you'd be too old. Say you are 22 when you graduate UG. You'd go to LS at 27, graduate at 30.
When you do go to law school, in the unlikely event you manage to do well enough to get a look from my firm, please let me know so I know to keep an eye out for your application and throw it in the trash.

Yeah. I'm top 10 or bust.
What about you? What type of schools are you aiming for?

A. Nony Mouse, I'm sorry but a poster asked for my opinion on why 5 years was too much. And it's merely my opinion and not intended to attack anyone.

Okay, then, for the record, Lincoln is very employed, and everyone here has reported that no one in their 30s has any problem getting biglaw jobs (assuming the requisite qualifications, of course).

Well maybe it was worth going when you graduated, but quite frankly, things are changing.

You've proven yourself as quite unknowledgeable on law school inputs and unreasonable in your assessment of outputs.I<3ScholarlySweets! wrote:Well maybe it was worth going when you graduated, but quite frankly, things are changing.
Go apply for jobs and study for the LSAT. It's a hard test, and Cornell & Company may end up being a long shot for you.

Re: How much helpful is work experience before law school?
Thanks, Dirigo.
I've been studying for the LSAT already, hitting above 165 consistently since October. I will take it in February and June. Will even retake in October and December if I don't get 170 or higher. I'm also URM and 3.85+UGPA.
And I don't need to apply for jobs since I already got offered one, but am not sure I should take it just yet.

Your initial question was naive, especially considering you answered the question within the question. Then you talk about your gpa, practice lsat score, and URM status. As if anyone cares. Then you act as if graduating law school at 30 is a death sentence. Just be gone with your naiveté.I<3ScholarlySweets! wrote:wow. this board is pretty mean.

Not a death sentence, but pretty bad, yes.
I think I've been reading too many articles on the decline of law.

Nope. Wrong. Actually, people who are 30 probably have an advantage because they have significant WE. This advantage is compounded if they have top grades. It's the people who are 40+ who are questionable.I<3ScholarlySweets! wrote:Not a death sentence, but pretty bad, yes.

Now, explain why you think those who are 40+ are at a disadvantage? Couldn't you use the same premise that they have SIGNIFICANT work experience and how it will benefit them after law school?

I<3ScholarlySweets! wrote:The bigger issue is what you'd be doing during that time period? If I were working for 5 years I think I would have secured a well-paying job with good benefits. Why would I then need to go to law school, especially considering the terrible legal market.
Exactly. Sounds like a plan. Do this and don't accrue debt.

Re: How much helpful is work experience before law school?
People who are 30 are young. People who are 40 are older and have worked for 18+ years. A big law firm will not want to hire someone who is 40 and is going to be a first year associate and won't make partner until their 47. The 40 year old will also be taking directions from people who are younger than him.I<3ScholarlySweets! wrote:Now, explain why you think those who are 40+ are at a disadvantage? Additionally, by the time you are 40, people will wonder why you decided to go to law school in the first place. At the age of 40 to 45, you start to experience age discrimination as well. You also might have kids and a mortgage at this time period as well.
People who are 28-30 usually graduate from MBA programs. Thus, while 28-30 is older for law school, it is still not considered too old to graduate from a law school. They are still young where a law firm will want to grow them. Still young where they have time to grow with a government agency, etc.

But MBA programs require their graduates to have work experience, unlike law schools.
