Question about estate planning internship

Post by JDanger007 » Sat Jan 25, 2014 12:30 am

I think that I am very interested in Elder Law, estate planning, etc. However, I am worried about this as 1L summer internship because of the nature of the work. I get the idea that I wouldnt be doing any legal research or writing for it which obviously is a key skill as a lawyer. Do you think that I should steer clear of this for 1L summer or go for it now if I think that I am interested in the field? Sorry if its in the wrong forum btw.

1L summer jobs don't usually lead to actual jobs so IMO it's a great time to explore an area of law that you may be interested in. If you do it this summer and it sucks you can do something different 2L summer. If you like it you can continue to pursue it.

Elder Law isn't really the same as estate planning, and there is plenty of research in both. No reason not to do it.

I wouldn't worry about the subject matter, but do try to find out whether you'd be doing any substantive research and writing, or whether you'd just be shadowing other people and making copies/fetching coffee. It doesn't really matter what you do 1L summer as long as you can talk about the totally fascinating and substantive legal experience you got in interviews. And its easier to talk about your substantive experience if you got some.
