America is doing a great disservice by allowing people to major in polisci, English, and philosophy. Or, at least, letting them use government-backed loans to do so. Liberal arts majors: Keep your fluff papers. I want my money back.

Philosophy's a great major as a complement to another major that's desired by employers. But I agree with the general idea; it could be questionable to study those degrees for free, forget with significant loans for them. Liberal arts majors improve one's writing and whatever, but you don't really need a full-on major with a bunch of advanced classes to acquire that improvement.beachbum wrote:America is doing a great disservice by allowing people to major in polisci, English, and philosophy. Double major? I hear if you double up on the shitty liberal arts degrees they equal one STEM degree so maybe there is a solution after all.Legacy Rabbit wrote:Hello There!beachbum wrote:America is doing a great disservice by allowing people to major in polisci, English, and philosophy. I mean, from what I've seen, orgo would help you adjust to the randomness of law school grading.iamgeorgebush wrote:stem majors /w superiority complexes thinking orgo is going to help them perform due diligence
My best friend was in the top 15% of a class last year. That year, they curved the class to a 2.1. She got a 2.9.
ETA: By "randomness," I mean the idea that you could study really well and devote your life to a class, and still come away with a bad grade.

No one is saying STEM will make you a better lawyer. We're talking about getting a job, any old job. Not performance at said job.iamgeorgebush wrote:stem majors /w superiority complexes thinking orgo is going to help them perform due diligence

yeah i don't think having majored in some STEM field is going to yield any tangible advantage over having majored in poli sci/english/philosophy/etc when it comes to getting a job as a lawyer, except for IP.Danger Zone wrote:No one is saying STEM will make you a better lawyer. oh, you mean non-law jobs?
sorry, i thought we were on a law school forum for some reason, and that op was asking specifically about law school.

Damn right. Except for that obvious tangible advantage, there is no tangible advantage to a STEM degree.iamgeorgebush wrote:yeah i don't think having majored in some STEM field is going to yield any tangible advantage over having majored in poli sci/english/philosophy/etc when it comes to getting a job as a lawyer, except for IP.

0L here, poli sci major during undergrad.
You find out too late that guidance councilors really only tell you what you want to hear, and not really what you need to hear. If I could do it again, I'd have majored in one of the sciences.

ok then buddy, show me some stats. let's stick to biglaw. what proportion of positions at amlaw100 firms are IP positions? i'm guessing less than 10%, but prove me wrong.beachbum wrote:And thus the value of math and statistics coursework.iamgeorgebush wrote:patent work making up such a big proportion of overall legal work.

eta: let's make sure this is only patent work, not copyright/trademark work, because the latter doesn't require or benefit from stem.

credited. it can help for patent litigators but it's certainly not necessary...plenty of top patent litigators who majored in poli sci/english/philosophy/etcpatogordo wrote:also most patent litigators are not le STEM master race and it's not particularly necessary

Re: PolSci Major in Undergrad
here beachbum, i did some work for you.
dla piper, the #1 firm by gross revenue of the amlaw 100, has 514 associates in the united states, 27 of whom are IP associates. for you stem folks, that's 5.25%. (and yes, i did all that w/o a stem degree...i know, crazy right??)
now beachbum, are you really proposing that it's worth majoring in a stem field in order to compete for that 5.25% of associate positions that are IP-related?
(and yes, perhaps dla piper isn't representative of the entire legal market in the united states...i doubt it, but go ahead and try to prove it if you think you can.)

only failed engineers go to law school anyway. so in that respect it's not a bad fallback. ipsecure is still a thing more or less. but almost certainly not worth le STEMing it up if your plan A is law school. and acting like it's gonna give you some leg up in actual practice is comical.
