UG Dilemma

Postby jordan15 » Sat Oct 12, 2013 11:30 pm

Right now I am in a dilemma. My family is going through a rough time and my parents think I should transfer to a school closer to home so I can help out. This school is a top 10 regional university and the school I currently go to is top 50 national university. I'm worried that receiving my degree from this lesser known school might hurt me when applying for biglaw and clerkships.

Current national university:
- twice as expensive
- I work to provide for COL
- I think I'm also graded on a harsher curve...not sure though.
- I'm not well established in any clubs, etc
- decent (though not amazing) alumni network. many grads end up at T14
- has a law school with a great pre-law program (lots of publishing and interning opportunities)

Potential regional university:
- half of the cost
- free rent plus parents would give me an allowance
- since it's smaller, it's possible that I could gain a better standing in ECs (like mock trial)
- I'd have a better GPA since I wouldn't have to work
- probably no alumni network when it comes to looking for law job :(
- family also has some connections that could get me an internship
- I'd help out with my family that is struggling emotionally

I don't want to out myself on this board but I'll PM the 2 schools to anyone who's curious. FWIW, the school I'm considering is just as hard/easy to get into out of HS so it's not like I'd be all of a sudden going to school with a bunch of idiots and could easily get a 4.0. I also have no idea what the curve is like for the classes I'd take but I seriously doubt it would be harder.

Thanks in advance!!

I also have no idea what a top 10 regional or top 50 national school is. Are those real things?

Just giving basic descriptions based on US News and the way they group/rank schools. I think they're very silly but I guess they help give an idea.

Top regional (west):

National:

Is there any evidence that biglaw/clerkships look at UG and not just law school?

If you think the name would actually hurt you (like a Cooley equivalent for UG), then once you graduate from law school it's probably reasonable to leave your UG off your resume entirely.

I just figured that since the entire industry seems to be so snooty and prestige based, that even if I went to a T14 I'd still be up against T14 students that also went to a top school. It's no Cooley thank god, but I'm assuming that nobody will have heard of it which will make them assume it's a Cooley equivalent.

Now that I think of it, I've actually seen people put multiple schools on their resume if they transferred and even when they did a summer somewhere else. I actually did a year at a Top 20 school before transferring to the Top 50, so maybe I should list all 3 on the resume. Even though I'll graduate from the regional, my classes will be equally spread throughout the 3. Does this seem like a stupid idea?

Do you currently go to an Ivy League or equivalent? If not, assume no one who is prestige obsessed cares about your regional UG, whether it's top 10 or top 40 or whatever.

Planning on a clerkship now is absurd. Basing your undergrad off of planning on a clerkship is even more absurd. Your odds of a clerkship are vastly improved by a good undergrad GPA, which helps you get into a good school.

That's what I figured...this site is just making me paranoid that every move I make now will bite me in the ass later.

I'll continue to conduct ridiculous searches of this site of my potential undergrad to try to calm myself. :|
