How serious are laptop tech requirements?

The school I plan on attending next fall just recently released a list of the minimum tech recommendations for a laptop. My current laptop, which works well for me in everything I've ever needed it for, meets all these requirements except the one for the processor - my Asus has an i3 processor, while the school recommends having at least an i5.

Is there a way to tell how serious this recommendation is? I'd really like to avoid buying a new computer, but if I'm going to have any sort of trouble running exam software or anything like that, of course I'll step up my laptop game. How seriously should I follow these recommendations, or is there a better way to get some more information?

An i5 is absurdly overpowered for what you will use a laptop for in law school.

Does your school require you to play Crysis 3?

Sounds like whoever wrote that requirement is completely clueless about computers and just looked up the stats of a Macbook Pro or something. A law school computer should be able to run your school's exam software, perhaps simultaneously with a word processing window or two, and web browser. It's hard to imagine any modern laptop that can't do those things.

Just as an example, NU's laptop requirements are universal for the whole university. So they "require" specs that can run, like, engineering modeling software and such, which obviously law students don't need.

A standard, $400-$500 laptop will serve your purposes well, as far as I can tell.
