Improving writing skillz before Law School

Postby JDeezy » Sun Feb 03, 2013 5:08 pm

I was a non-humanities UG major and now work a 9-5 that requires very little writing. I have over a year before heading to law school.

I'm considering writing a (non-fiction) book, mostly for my own pleasure. I'm guessing that type of writing would do little to develop my legal writing skills. Anything I can do before law school to work on it? Or is it just a thing you need to learn as a 1L?

Gracias.

IMO reading a lot of books will improve your writing skills much more than writing a novel will. When you write all you're doing is regurgitating the grammar/syntax/language skills you already have, not necessarily learning anything new. Pick up a book from the local library once in a while, there are a ton of interesting topics to gain more knowledge about while expanding your linguistic palette.

Writing a book is an awesome idea. I commend you for it. Please, proceed.

Read and keep a journal.

You can read a style manual (Strunk and White being the most popular), but this is a good summary:
