let's not kid ourselves -- would you want the father of your child to be that polo-shirt wearing fatty from Sigma Chi whose biggest contribution to the world thus far has been his ability to legally buy his friends beer, or that one nice but slightly awkward fellow who had straight As in college and in his spare time helped draft the constitution for Kosovo?

I fully expect law school to be like fun.'s music video for All the Pretty Girls.

The reason I did this was because I don't want to reveal where I go to school while making my point. These are the only schools I applied to for my JD/MBA, and I just wanted to provide an idea without too much detail. Hell, let's dump Northwestern in as another possible N, and Cornell as another possible C. Amazingly, the prestige of my school isn't diminished at all even after throwing all of these places into a string of letters.

It looks more like you go to Penn and you want to compare it to HYS/CCN. You could have just said you're a student at MVPB, then we wouldn't know which school it was.

In the same way that the number "2" is not any smaller when I list it in a set: "9, 8, 7, 6, 2."

If I said I was at MVPB, you probably would still guess Penn as it is the only one of those schools with a relatively large JD/MBA program. It's more ambiguous this way, as the program is relatively well enrolled at all of the schools I listed.

You're obviously new here. The full list of the "good" schools in the T-14 that everyone uses is HSCNCCDPN, with none of the repeats specifically defined. It's been that way since US News first started ranking schools. Be careful or people are going to make a bunch of outraged accusations punctuated by eye rolling smiley faces. This might not seem so bad, but when you remember that they are smirking to themselves and thinking of you as they use their cheeto covered hands to click back over to youporn, pull down their sweatpants, and begin their umpteenth bout of furious masturbation today it becomes a little more disturbing.

You mean HYSCCN? HYS should really be YSH, but absolutely no one ever says CNC (2009 was the last time NYU outranked Chicago).

Happy to clear up the discrepancy because it seems you are confused.

The appropriate tiers are:
Y...H, S, Chi ... Columbia, Nyu ... P, V, NU, Cornell, Boalt ... Duke, Mich ...................................... Gulc

Sources:
1. http://www.leiterrankings.com/new/2012_ ... pact.shtml
2. http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandr ... w-rankings

I think this talk is really helping clear up some common misconceptions as well as some rare misconceptions (such as NYU being a T5).

I think this ordering is hella better than borg's, but once you get this detailed you need to factor in the goals of the applicant.

Want to work in NY? Bump up Columbia and NYU.
Why to do PI? Bump NYU.
Debt averse? Bump whatever school gives you a full-ride.

Also, I'd never rank Mich below Duke. Source

I don't know how someone can objectively say Harvard, Stanford and Chicago are a tier. and Columbia is a step down, without qualifying this somehow

....ahh! I was looking at this wrong. I thought 2014 meant each of the commas separated tiers, so YH are a tier, S is by itself, and so on. I thought he just had waaaay to many tiers and ignored that.

Since you pointed that out, yes, that's idiotic. If we were to keep that same order, I'd change the tiers:
Y...H, S,
Chi ... Columbia, Nyu ...
P, V,
NU, Cornell, (I don't think NW should be up here)
Boalt ... Duke, Mich (I don't think Boalt or Mich should be down here)
...................................... Gulc

Law firms don't hire based on how many times your professor has been cited.

I will let Brian Leiter know you think so, I fear he will be irate.

In the meantime I'm glad we have put NYU being in the T5 to rest.

Borg was just trolling you hard.

On topic, I'm sure that there are people who are astoundingly wealthy at all kinds of schools. I wonder if there is a general trend toward more wealth at both ends of the rankings. That somehow would make sense to me.

Egregious anti-NYU trolling ITT, they are arguably the best school in the nation.

How the fuck did this turn into a serious rankings discussion while I was asleep? Unless this is some really good, well coordinated meta-troll conspiracy (in which case I'm impressed), I can't believe that my random arrangement of a shitload of letters and the statement that we intentionally don't define any of the repeats produced yet another discussion of how to order the schools based on tiers, with people regarding mine as a serious attempt. I don't know what to do with you people.

I really don't want to go through all of the ways that the last 2 pages of my posts were trolling as that would negate half of the fun I had, but suffice it to say on my end no participating in this thread constituted a serious ranking discussion. With the exception of GULC being a mile behind the schools behind it, I very much meant that.

Yes, and by the way you were being hilarious. Then all of these random serious comments started springing up. I think there are people out there who spend most of their lives mentally ordering schools, so they can't help themselves.

Are we talking median wealth or average? Are we talking rich as in assets or liquid capital. I'm sure there are schools that are rural off the map where there are kids attending that would raise the entire school net worth quite a bit since land values have increased so much but this isn't liquid capital.

You can find HNWI&F at every school so it is sort of a stupid question. You have to remember that in the HNW world which I consider to start at around 25m+ (although that is relatively pretty pauper) people are a lot more mobile and education means a lot less. It's your contacts and access to capital that matter. My rural state school boasts a lot of families in the 30m-90m range for directly attainable assets and a few between 100m-600m and that's a rural state with under 1m in population that attend public state schools and a few go to private easternly schools.

Although where their kids go to school is irrelevant since at this point in my state the majority of businesses and land are already in 3rd or 4th generation, the majority of aggregate/ballast/mineral railroad construction is 5th now entering 6th generation of ownership. Meat packing is currently at the 3rd/4th generation although that's a little far fetched since a lot of the original money from the railroad meatpacking backrolled the industry in 1960 when the shift occurred to move meatpacking away from the major metro areas and to the rural areas for livestock and poultry.

The families own the businesses and the people who actually ask questions like the OP are the ones that work them as employees and make sure that these families stay wealthy. A lot of the crap that Forbes etc doesn't do well or keep track of is old money and families. When one person doesn't have all of their worth in a newly formed public company it's hard to estimate their NW.

It's a lot harder to nail down the net worth of old money especially when people don't remember families that took big pay days 20,30,50,100 years ago from insurance, banking, railroads, interstate construction, telecom, security etc. and it's sitting in trusts, ranches, or in offshore accounts.

TLDR: Stupid OP question unless it is narrowed down to what we're talking about for defining wealth.
