Biglaw Opportunities in Atlanta

Postby lawhopeful10 » Thu Aug 09, 2012 1:43 pm

I am applying to Emory and UGA among a variety of other schools. I was just wondering if Atlanta has biglaw opportunities for students who do well at those schools. Obviously the firms are not near the amount in New York or DC. Thanks in advance.

Just a lowly 1L here, but I have a feeling you're about to hear how Atlanta is a bloodbath. From what I've heard, it is.

Those two schools will do just fine for getting biglaw in Atlanta, as long as you're at the top of your class. I'm no expert, but I've heard something like 10-15% at Emory and 5-10% at UGA. With that said, Emory's not worth the money at sticker. If you're a Georgia resident and get into UGA, I'd take that over sticker at Emory.

I'd like to work in Atlanta and had this same convo with various lawyers in town and on TLS. Law firms love UGA/GA State/Emory grads. Problem is, they only love the ones near the top.

Atlanta Biglaw also loves several T14 schools, but you're still going to have to do well. Top third to feel safe. Possibly median, depending on your ties, interview skills, which school and several other factors.

Good luck!

Basically I wouldn't bank on getting Atlanta biglaw(or any biglaw) from the GA schools. If you are like top 5%, you have a great chance, but depending on other factors as mentioned above. So you should only attend the GA schools with a workable plan without biglaw because odds are not too hot. And even if you do land a SA position, it is still not guaranteed that you get a real perm. offer. And from a non-t14 it may be hard to land anything biglaw elsewhere as a 3L.

Pessimistic yes. Plan for the worst, work toward the best.

Would't say uniquely...Ex: WUSTL, Notre Dame, and GW :)

From that thread you linked-at least two firms were mentioned as deferring and no offering SAs. Any more info on that? One was trout man; the other was Bryan Cave.
