Gandhi was a lawyer. Tell them by making fun of lawyers they are making fun of Gandhi. Making fun of Gandhi is not okay. Therefore, they are going to hell.

If you cannot fight a stereotype reinforce it.

TITCR

Make a meme out of that person that goes something like:

Makes fun of lawyers

Works at Starbucks

in my experience, though lawyers can be scum, in situations revolving money non-lawyers are generally more likely to be scum. i believe people call lawyers scum, because in situations requiring lawyers they themselves act like scum.

No. You are applying undue strictness/redundancy to the argument. The premise is "Making fun of Gandhi is not okay."
This is a non-conditional identity.
If the premise was qualified to state that "Making fun of Ghandi is not okay to do to Ghandi" (highly redundant) then my stated assumption would be wrong and yours would be correct, however; as it is, you are changing a term in the argument.

The fact that you felt the compulsion to go off topic and try and correct me on something so trivial in the first place, suggests to me that you just might be an insufferable douche bag.

Over and over again this. This is a profession where by it's very nature thee is always a body of people trying to make you look like a monster. Either the opposing counsel's lawyer trying to convince a judge or a jury, or the general public who does, and always will hate you. You kinda have to be haterproof to go into law.

Also, the people who become a lawyer because they like arguing and always think they're right tend to bomb the LSAT. I've tutored many of these people, and they normally have personality issues. The laid back more honest people, in my experience, have performed much better on the LSAT and gotten into better schools. They're also more likely to get their tutor, course instructor or college professors to really go into depth and provide the best study advise they can rather than count the minutes on the clock.

On a related note, how would you respond to in person quips about how lawyers are liars and , or morally bad. I have this family friend who tells me at the end of the day, she would prefer to be "herself" rather than a lawyer who is successful and thus morally bad.

She tells me repeatedly of lawyers she knows that are all liars and morally bad. She knows im applying to law school..Also, her default position on attacking people's argument is "well he's a lawyer and we all know lawyers are liars, so therefore he must be, lying." I usually let her comments slide cause I feel sorry for her and plus I dont feel like arguing with logical fallacies...

But since this thread is up anyway, id love advice on something simple to say back to her that would silence her "lawyers are bad, all they do is lie" mantra

Here are three four options:

1. The cliche "Most of the Founding Fathers were lawyers."

2. You could reciprocate her logic that her personal experience with "bad lawyers" means that all lawyers are bad. Attila the Hun was not a lawyer. Attila the Hun was bad. Therefore, all non-lawyers are bad.

3. You could confront her and be like "Oh, so you're saying I am a morally corrupt liar?"

4. None of the above.

One need only spend 5 minutes browsing around TLS to understand why everyone outside of this bubble thinks that lawyers are scum.

Nay, nay, English teachers are naught (NOT) scum, but I am naat (NOT) an English-speaker. Would you like the entire Earth to become one boring culture and to speak one boring language? Lawyers are scum, with very very rare exceptions, yet to be experienced. Abandon your law school now or we will all need to buy much more soap in the near future. Hey! At least I know how to spell properly in most cases! Except were I intentionally misspell on purpose ;-)

A taxicab driver picks up a priest and is driving casually to the priest's destination when he sees a lawyer. Having been recently screwed by a lawyer, the taxi driver flys into a rage and actually swerves off the road to clip this passing lawyer. At the last second he remembers he has a priest in the back and throws the wheel around, pulling the car back onto the road, narrowly avoiding the lawyer. He says to the priest, "I am so sorry father, I have no idea what came over me." The priest serenely answered, "fear not my son, I got him with the door."

I really hope that this thread refocuses on whats important. More lawyer jokes. No sarcasm at all

What's the difference between a good lawyer and a great lawyer?
A good lawyer knows the law. A great lawyer knows the judge.
