1L 2L Summers: Health Insurance

Postby Worker and Parasite » Wed May 09, 2012 3:26 pm

What do 1L/2L students do during the summer for Medical Insurance? Is that handled through their potential internship or does the school provide an extra 3 months for a fee or do you have to go and find it on your own?

Depends on your school's plan, but most school plans run through summer.

For example, in case you get in off the WL at GULC:
Student Enrollment Period
Coverage must be purchased at the beginning of each Plan year. Students enrolling in the new Plan
year will have continuous coverage if they enroll and pay the premium during the prescribed
enrollment period. The enrollment period for the 2011-2012 Plan year begins July 1, 2011, and ends
September 15, 2011. Eligible students who enroll during this enrollment period will be covered from
August 15, 2011, through August 14, 2012

If you purchase the optional Kaiser insurance through my school, you get coverage year around. But it is pretty expensive. I stuck with the school insurance that was included in tuition. It's only for nine months and the school clinic is closed during the summer. So I just prayed I didn't get sick during the summer. If I had, I would have had to go to a free clinic

Do most people purchase the costly student health insurance package? At IU-B via Aetna, it's like $2200 / year. And even then, there's a $500 deductible and 20% copays. I'm not sick, and I don't get sick very often, so I'm thinking about purchasing a "fire insurance" policy online (just in case) and paying cash at the university clinic.

I'm curious to hear what others do...

Well now I think you're able to stay on your parents' insurance until you're 26. So that could be an option depending on the plans they have and how old you are.

You only need insurance in case of serious catastrophes. If you are concerned about getting strep throat, you can always just go to a clinic at walmart and take care of it for 50 buck or so.

You young people. I'm looking forward to joining your risk pool. Currently for $1070 I can get one month of coverage with a $1000 deductible. Come August, I'll get 6 months for $750, and have a $250 deductible. And I use the crap out of it.

ETA: and btw, if the court goes ahead and overturns PPACA (aka Obamacare), you'll want to have creditable coverage and you'll want to maintain that without breaks so that you don't end up in a pre-existing condition situation. They suck and they can hit you for something simple and cheap.
