My mom works for a company that uses a website to check people's facebook, twitter, myspace, etc. and even if you've changed your name and they search your real name it shows up.

you can change your settings so that you have to approve posts and pics you are tagged in before they show up

My Facebook Etiquette:

1. Lock down your FB page.

2. Configure your FB account so that it cannot be found via a Google search.

3. Screen your pictures. Better yet, post no pictures. If you must post a picture, post an avatar.

4. This should be obvious, but may folks still fall prey to it-- don't post politically incorrect information EVER. When I say EVER, I mean EVER, even if you THINK the group is SECRET or your page is locked down. Why, you may ask? Well, your 'friends' can take a screen capture of your unflattering comments, or the admin of your group could switch the group from SECRET to PUBLIC.

5. Screen your friends, because unfortunately, many prospective employers believe in the fallacy of "birds of a feather, flock together."

6. Screen all posts to your page. Why, you may ask? Read #4.

Deactivating your Facebook is probably a good idea. I didn't have it for a while and honestly I didn't notice my life being much different. Except now I have randoms who talk to me. I don't use it a ton except to post random sarcastic stuff.

Other than that I don't really see the purpose/need for it.

They cross reference facial symmetry features with government databases, high school yearbooks, and family photos.

In other words, they know what you did last Halloween.
Wow...

What's your source for this info?

Career services has told us all about the hiring practices at firms which obviously include thorough google checks. But I had no idea the admission departments at schools did anything like this.
Whoosh.
Lol.
