I'd take being captain of an Intrepid-class starship over a Galaxy-class starship any day of the week.MTal wrote:I'll take being a hot-topic manager 5 years out of high school, over an 150k indebted TTT shitlawyer making 35k with no benefits or savings, any day of the week.Gecko of Doom wrote: OMG. As MTal has suggested earlier, working at Hot Topic in the mall is where the upward mobility is. In no time at all, you'll be running the mall, making well over six figures, and have no debt. MTal and I guesstimate this should take you five years max.

Re: Employment situation really that dire?
I don't know how it is at Hot Topic, but the store in the mall I worked at for a little while during UG required store managers to have a bachelor's degree. They had a lot of school debt, often worked 60+ hours a week, and started out at $30k. I know you're often out of touch with reality and don't really understand how shitty it is for a lot of non-lawyers, but come on man.MTal wrote:I'll take being a hot-topic manager 5 years out of high school, over an 150k indebted TTT shitlawyer making 35k with no benefits or savings, any day of the week.Gecko of Doom wrote: OMG. Read it and weep. Top hot-topic managers make 59k plus 7k in bonus. Shitty managers make less, but that's to be expected.Helmholtz wrote:I doubt most Hot Topic managers even touch the $40k mark.MTal wrote:you could become the hot topic store manager, with a salary of prolly around 60k.

My sample size = bigger.
Ah, it's sometimes nice to view the thought process of a brain that thought it was a swell idea to go to some shitty school in a saturated market and then drop out after a year. Keep up the good work.

Also, you'll notice that the topic row includes bonuses. That's what "total pay" means. Again, I love to see how your brain works.MTal wrote:Read it and weep. Re: Employment situation really that dire?
My original contention was that it's possible to make 60k as a hot topic manager, and here I have a sample that says some make even MORE than that. Yeah, managers who are not on top of things will most likely make less, but that is still far better than shitlaw, so my original argument stands.Helmholtz wrote:--LinkRemoved--MTal wrote:Read it and weep. Wait, who made more than $60k? Also, that was not your fucking contention at all. It was "become a Hot Topic manager -> make $60k."MTal wrote: My original contention was that it's possible to make 60k as a hot topic manager, and here I have a sample that says some make even MORE than that.

No, I refuse to even engage in a discussion of what-is-worse because the intangibles of reality impede any potential fruitfulness said discussion could provide.MTal wrote:So you disagree with my contention that being a hot-topic manager is worse than being a heavily indebted TTT shitlaw loser?NZA wrote:I. In other words, your approach to this situation is foolish because its premise (that everyone is looking for X in their employment situation, and thus Y is obviously a far better choice ALWAYS than Z) is absurd.

Being a Hot Topic Manager is relatively high up on the mall food chain. A "heavily indebted TTT shitlaw loser" is at the absolute lowest point on the law food chain. Why the fuck are you even comparing these? Since when did "Person A who is doing relatively well in profession X" earn the comparison to "Person B who crashed and burned in profession Y"?MTal wrote: So you disagree with my contention that being a hot-topic manager is worse than being a heavily indebted TTT shitlaw loser?

Re: Employment situation really that dire?
Ok, can you list an example where working 60 hour weeks for 35k with no benefits and 150k debt is better than working 50 hour weeks at hot-topic for 50k a year with benefits and no debt? Perhaps some degenerate would actually prefer such an outcome (perhaps an individual so obsessed with prestige that he is willing to take a MASSIVE cut in quality of live for the "priviledge" of being able to call himself a lawyer), but the vast, VAST majority of people would recoil at such a choice. Most people who go to law school do not see themselves in that situation, but that is precisely the one that they find themselves after 3 years. I suspect many 3L's here would literally jump at the chance to make 50k at hot-topic.NZA wrote:No, I refuse to even engage in a discussion of what-is-worse because the intangibles of reality impede any potential fruitfulness said discussion could provide.MTal wrote:So you disagree with my contention that being a hot-topic manager is worse than being a heavily indebted TTT shitlaw loser?NZA wrote:I. Re: Employment situation really that dire?
1. It's not the lowest point. Doc review and full-on unemployment are lower. 2. Of all the students who WILL get legal jobs, a large majority WILL end up in shitlaw since biglaw/government/clerkships make up only a small fraction of the total legal jobs available.Helmholtz wrote:Being a Hot Topic Manager is relatively high up on the mall food chain. My points are that you are 1) comparing apples to oranges and that 2) one seek out a shitty mall job because of the chance that they may fail at their dream career and 3) your thinking is completely backwards and cowardly.MTal wrote:Ok, can you list an example where working 60 hour weeks for 35k with no benefits and 150k debt is better than working 50 hour weeks at hot-topic for 50k a year with benefits and no debt? @OP if id have to take an uneducated guess id say its not as bad as people make it seem. I think that a JD should help you in any career that you end up choosing. Even if your job doesn't require a JD, it can indirectly help you. I mean no job is going to say "requires philosophy degree", but their are skills that you will gain from majoring and taking philosophy classes. With all of that being said, i do think it is very important to find out all of the information, and really look into everything before going to law school. It's to big of an investment of time and money to not be cautious.

Because life is all about absolutes. True story.
On the other hand, retail management is horrible. At 60k, you're a sr. store manager. You'll work 60 hours a week, and god forbid you don't meet your quotas for a couple quarters.
Did I mention that at 50, you'll probably have a top-tier MBA 25 y/o deciding whether or not you're up for a promotion to a higher-traffic venue... 30 miles away from that location?

Same story at my job dude, we're all under pressure to meet targets, but that's even MORE true of law practice, and shitlaw especially. You are expected to bring in clients and be a "rainmaker", if you can't, then the firm has no use for you.ResolutePear wrote:Because life is all about absolutes. True story.
