yah but how long does it take to do a page of law reading? If casebooks are in 6-point font with byzantine sentences, 100 pages or more sounds like death.

It's not the font size that makes legal reading slow. As a very rough rule of thumb, it probably takes about an hour to an 1.5 hours to read 10 pages in the average casebook.

I've found that if I read a commercial brief of a case before I read the whole case I can go through it faster because I already have an idea of what I'm going to read..booya

While this is a not a bad idea, I would warn the newly minted 1Ls that this could quickly deteriorate to not reading your casebook at all. From what I can tell that doesn't work well for most people, well not if you want to be at the top of the class.

I'm surprised that this method isn't more frequently used by even the most-disciplined students.

I think some of the most-driven students don't want "help." I know I'm that way. I like to figure stuff out on my own.

I don't use it; I'm disciplined. It's because the time involved in reading the commercial brief and understanding it = the time saved by reading it (for me).

It takes me 5-10 minutes to understand a commercial brief

...which enables you to read the whole case about 5-10 minutes faster. (I think that's what CarDarr was saying, anyway. I don't use commercial briefs because they're often focused on the wrong aspect of the law or incongruent with what my professor is trying to teach.)

DC1L, I'm sure you'll figure out what works for you once you actually start law school.

Yea well I adjust my understanding of the case to what I read and what my professor teaches. I don't use briefs in lieu of anything.

Did you use briefs the entire year? I found that by second semester I could blow through cases and extract the relevant points of law. I would skim the facts sections, highlight the primary points of law, and highlight the holdings, writing a few notes in the margins. I could read most cases in 20 minutes.

I did rely more on Westlaw headnotes in my internship though. When you're researching, you really don't need to read most cases all the way through. It can help to learn to use headnotes effectively.

You're reading briefs and cases before you've started law school?

Oh, in that case your advice for studying techniques is highly appreciated on this site. I'm sure you'll find that, since you haven't even taken a law school exam, everyone will be just clamoring to hear about how you read your cases.

I wouldn't brag about that either. Good schools don't usually give credit for such things.

Also, it's not trial and error if it's in a fake class without the real stress, exams, or consequences. Nor should you need an entire class for trial and error. You should be able to judge your reading time and retention on your own.

Further, the people ITT are looking for advice about real classes, not fake ones. So your experience reading for a fake class is irrelevant.
