What does 'unusual family circumstances' mean?

Some schools mention this as a factor in their consideration of applicants. What sort of circumstances matter enough to bear mentioning? Can you add something without appearing whiny?

Death, serious illness, extreme financial difficulty, etc (assuming they had a severe effect on you).

i.e. absent parent(s), abusive parents, poor

I'd expect that if you have to ask if it's whiny, it's whiny.
