Postby LiveFreeOrLaw » Mon Mar 28, 2011 4:55 pm

Im getting no scholly from CLS. Including room & board, tuition, and books, how much am I in the red realistically if I were to attend Columbia?

Don't forget about that interest! And if you got into NYU as well you're looking at 4,000 a year less due to the tuition difference.

Without interest though youre looking at 222,000 dollars. If you pay that off over 10 years at a monthly payment of 2700 at roughly 7%, you're looking at roughly 80,000 in interest. So in total 300,000 dollars. YEY!

...and then a comparable amount more due to cost of living differences.

They're not that different. Yeah, you'll probably live in a smaller place at nyu. But even then, if you pay 200 more a month, that equates to a 2,000 dollar difference. And since columbia's tuition and fees is about 5-6,000 more, the 2,000 more in rent means the difference is about 4,000... like i originally said.

PLUS you get to be in the village instead of MH. So it's not like you're losing out on that 2,000 increase anyways.

Columbia's tuition/fees is 2642 more, and Columbia budget's an additional $3700 in non-room/board living expenses (that don't appear in NYU's budget). That's where the difference is. CLS budgets $1283/month for rent, which while probably the median rent paid, is higher than what people paying for LS on straight loans is paying.

Anyway, the point being that once you're out $200k, the difference is negligible, tbh.

Although you could go to NYU and live in Brooklyn and it would be a lot cheaper than living near CLS.
