General Advice- Florida schools

I took the LSAT first time in December, scored a horrendous 137, retook in February, and made a 146. This combines with a 3.37 G.P.A. I've applied to Stetson, FAMU, Barry, and Ave Maria, which are all relatively close to my home in Tampa or relatives who live near the general vicinities of those campuses. For the latter three, I know I have a shot, not a guaranteed one, but a shot nonetheless, as I have a strong writing background dating back to high school and I took poly sci/philosophy courses throughout college. I'm not going to ask my implied odds at Stetson with 3.37/146. I already know the answer. I applied because it is my first choice school, and I'm fully rearing up to take the June LSAT and go through a petition process. If I was to be accepted with that LSAT, Dante's Inferno would categorically freeze over. My question is not what my odds are for Stetson (which I know are crappy), but has Stetson taken 146's in the past, and if so, how many?

I'm bored- so I looked on LSN

Since 2003, 2 students with a 146 have been accepted at Stetson based on LSN. One was a URM and one was not (but the latter did have a 3.95 GPA). I would guess they also applied PT. No one with below a 146 has been accepted.

You definitely need to A. research debt vs. future employment prospects from the schools you are applying to and B. jump over to the LSAT prep to find out which work books to purchase.

FYI, if I were you I would buy all of the Powerscore Bibles. I only used the Logical Reasoning Bible because I was already doing well on LG and RC, so I can't vogue for the LG or RC books, but the LR book was excellent in helping me obtain the LSAT score that I wanted.

LOL. This is encouraging :P

I won't give up, though. I'll try for part-time then re-take the LSAT in June if I have to. Thanks for the info.

Yea, I'm french toast with maple syrup with that LSAT for Stetson, at least right now. But I can't sign up for the June LSAT til one of the other three takes me.

If I actually pull this off and become the third person to get accepted with a 146 in a decade, I'll lol pretty hard and definitely let you guys know. I'm frieken insane for even trying this.

However, paying the full tuition bill at Stetson even if you get in is a different obstacle all together. Looks like a fun area though. You should consider a LSAT course. I agree with the TLS thinking that self study is better, but I think for those is the 140's a class is great for teaching the basics and laying a foundation (read-150's). Self study is required to go up from there.

Good Luck with your decisions/cycle!

I took Blackstone. It helped me raise my score from a 137. I may repeat the course, though.

Do you feel like you have studied as hard as you can and did the best you can? If not, definitely retake class and LSAT. If you really want to go to law school (and not just any school, but one that will make the investment worthwhile), you need to take a class and study on your own afterwards for some time. Skip June, focus on October. Treat it like a full time job (on top of your normal full time job, if necessary). After all, the difference that score will have in scholarship $ alone could be worth over $200,000 plus interest. Now factor in the difference in future wages... It's worth the time and effort.

+1

Not to be rude to all the people who got 146s, but I would bet that anyone who was capable of forming compound and complex sentences as redlighter has in the OP, they can get a significantly higher score with serious effort.

I dunno. I feel as though I've peaked on ths test, but most likely I'll be enduring it yet a third time. The prep course helped me substantially with games, but for reading comp and logical reasoning I'm still only getting half right. I've been stuck in a 145-147 practice test rut for two months and don't know how to get out of it. No, I'm definitely not gung-ho on A&M or Barry (MAYBE Ave Maria- because of the up-and-coming reputation), but I don't feel as though I know how to go about these other sections. If you know an approach, advice could never hurt.

First article wrote:One current professor told me, “Our student body now is one of the four or five worst in America.” The instability has also wreaked havoc on the school’s reputation: in the 2009 U.S. News & World Report law school rankings, Ave Maria tied for last place in the peer-assessment category, the most important measure in determining a school’s standing. (The school was not officially ranked because U.S. News doesn’t rank schools that land in the bottom tier.) Meanwhile, there are signs that Monaghan’s foundation, which funds the law school and the university, is on the verge of running out of money, in part because Monaghan bet his fortune—and the future of his nonprofits—on the now-crumbling Florida real estate market. Earlier this year, Ave Maria University’s second-longest-standing professor resigned, but not before sending a letter to administrators expressing his alarm at the school’s financial straits. “I fear that all of us (to different degrees) are participating in something that we may later deeply regret,” he wrote, “namely selling to young people and their families [an] educational product that we do not have sufficient reason to believe can be delivered.”

Meanwhile, in June, the U.S. Department of Education reported that Ave Maria School of Law had failed its financial responsibility test, the only law school in the nation to do so. Even more troubling, the school ranked sixth to last among all American institutions of higher learning on the department’s financial responsibility index, thanks partly to its multimillion-dollar deficit. With its finances in disarray, the school has shelved plans for the $30 million building across from Mansion Row. When Ave Maria School of Law finally opened for business in Florida this August, it was in a former retirement home on the outskirts of Naples.
aliarrow wrote:Added for quick reference when someone starts asking if it could be worth it to attend a TTT. For the record, Ave Maria is officially the worst law school in the nation; not Barry, Nova Southeastern, Thomas Jefferson, or any of that other bs.
