So in preparation for law school, I'm working on my typing skillz. I've gotten to a point where I can touch type just as fast as I hunt and peck, and my goal is to get up to 70 WPM. I was very happy that I progressed to the point where I'm at, but a recently started to worry, because I use the qwerty setup, and I'm wondering, if most of my classmates are using the Dvorak keyboard will that put me at a disadvantage, and make the curve harder? I heard that Dvorak typers can usually hit like 100 WPM. Am I wasting my time with a qwerty setup, and I will be TTT if I can't use Dvorak? That would be a pain, because I'm just getting the hang of it. Does anyone have any experience with this?

i have half-heartedly attempted to switch to dvorak a dozen times and never succeeded.

i suggest you keep at it. i type in the 150wpm range and i only use like 4-5 fingers.

my "home position" is left hand on ASDF and right pinky on shift, right pointer on J. i kind of just wing it from there, my hands float around and i rarely have more than 4 fingers on keys at one time. i guess it's kind of a bastardized touch-typing, like when you write cursive but half your letters are in print.

Even the bloggers and programmers I know find switching to Dvorak to be too much of a pain in the ass. You will be fine.

switching is a huge pain in the ass. i did a switch last week and my typing speed fell from 90 on qwerty to 40 wpm dvorak. but i'm improving. software programmers get bad results with dvorak because dvorak is designed for the english language based on letter frequency. code is as random on qwerty as it is on dvorak. i believe that anyone who plans to write mostly in english and puts in an honest effort will see improvements over time. but i dunno if law school is a good reason to do it or not. i type a lot all the time and just want to be foster. it would help with exams and note taking of course.

Honestly, I probably need to learn to type properly as well. I got through 4 years of undergrad without knowing how to touch type.

I never learned to type particularly well, and it didn't seem to hurt me at all. I guess thats because I type juuuust fast enough to be able to get everything down that I need. I only use 2 fingers of my left hand to type and 4 fingers on my right hand. Why this is the case, I couldn't possibly explain to you. Just a force of habit that developed for a long time since I first got a computer when I was 9 years old.
