if you can find someone who will tolerate these traits, they're probably a doormat with low self-esteem.

You didn't tell me you were dating a 1L.

i'm dating a 2L; this is describing myself

Damn! I was just about to say "she's talking about herself."

Date, but date outside your law school. Fucking with classmates is a bad idea.

NO

Better to find an SO that is comfortable with seeing you less regularly than other people are than to find an SO with the same kind of schedule as you do. You go with the later, and you will never see each other.

You need a flexible SO.

I voted 'meh' I think it is a case by case issue. My torts prof, who is a casebook author, edits for ALI, and was a grad of one of the 'trinity' of top law schools, met her husband on the first day of law school.

I don't get this notion. What is any better when you get in the working world, especially if you're logging 60+ hours a week?

A friend/co-worker of mine once did some research on this very subject. This was right after he was accepted to Maryland. He was about a year into a relationship with this girl he really liked. I don't know how he researched this, but his findings told him that only marriage can survive law school. He proposed and married her before August. I don't work with him anymore, but they are still together on facebook. That's as official as it gets.

If you don't run into an exceptional woman, don't go looking. One bad fight during finals and you just fucked up your semester, and possibly job prospects. I'm just fortunate that all of my bloodiest fights occurred during 2L rather than 1L.

I'm not in law school but I would tend to agree with this based on my personal "common sense." I would go a step further than "don't go looking" and say make an honest effort not to get involved in anything serious; but, if you've found an exceptional man/woman like Drake said, go for it.

Honestly, I was broken up a few days before my open memo was due. I probably didn't even lose any productivity. I was upset the whole first 24 hrs or so, but then to keep my mind off feelings, I just did school stuff constantly.
It may have actually helped more than hurt. I wouldn't keep out of a relationship because of school. Being in a relationship can make you a lot happier, which can help your grades and keep you sane. You just have to know when to cut the cord. If it starts making you unhappy, quit it then. It's the drama that will screw you, not the relationship itself.

A lot of how it will effect you is dependent on how long the relationship was, how intense/deep, how long problems have been going on, etc. It's different for almost everyone.

Dating in your section? Bad mojo unless you guys coincidentally were dating for years beforehand.... Actually, that may make it worse. Eff that.

Dating in your school? Not as bad... But keep looking.

Anyone outside your school walls (above the age of consent) would be preferable assuming that person is understanding and keeps themselves busy / has their own lives.

Unless you had a ring on your finger pre-1L, avoid commitment stuff until after 2L year when (hopefully) you will have a better job prospect picture.

Lighten up, Francis. Dating is only a bad idea if you're going to be immature about it. Most law students aren't the type you want to be dating, anyway, but if you find one you do -- go for it.

I mean...if you're going to be a lawyer and are planning to work in the more time-consuming/stressful areas of law, you're going to have to make room for a personal life at some point. Whether or not that's law school is a personal choice for you. Unless you just want to end up alone or something, in which case, I guess it never matters.

You can just do what most BigLaw attorneys seem to do, and just find and marry the first girl who meets your minimum qualifications, see her three hours a week, and fuck prostitutes.
