legal assistant vs. finance/operation vs finance/research

Post by am060459 » Thu Sep 30, 2010 6:40 pm

i've received three offers.

the legal assistant position is at a V10. 2 yr commitment.

the finance/operation position is at a fortune 10. the position is not interesting to me but the opportunity for growth at this firm is tremedous and its name is well know.

the finance/research position is at a mid sized company. this finance position is more interesting than the previous one.

for the finance offers i plan on spending 2yrs.

i want to go to law school but dont mind pushing it back for 2-3 years. i think if i go into the job market it would benefit me in many ways.

i dont know what else to say so please feel free to ask.

which one should i choose and why?

legal assistant is 40k (overtime included)

both finance positions are low 40s.

The finance positions sound the most interesting to me but if you're sold on law school the v10 will give you a good chance to network. If there is any substantial chance that you want to work in business/finance, those might be better even if law school is what you think you want most.

Edit: Finance/Research would look good on a application though.

i personally am drawn to the finance/research position as that is much interest to me. im certain of going into law school and pursing business law. im really undecided between the legal assistant and the finance/research.

anyone else have any input?

Legal Assistant would help you out if you want a job there after graduating law school.
Finance/Research would be the most broad combination of meaningful and enjoyable experience.

It's up to you, but I would personally go with the latter. Two years is a long time to have to sacrifice quality of life, even if it means better chances at a job after graduation, if you do well you will get a job after graduation regardless.

Also, there is some benefit here to getting some other work experience that you would considering do as a job. You may end up loving the finance reasearch position and stay in that for a few years. Don't pigeonhole yourself into the legal profession if you are interested in seeing what another industry is like.

definitely the research position

i can't comment too much on the legal assistant position, but i dont think this really differentiates you from others pursuing law school

the operations position is likely rather dead end--operations can be very boring, and even at the best of firms, it is hard to leverage that into a front office position

research will be interesting, provide you with a valuable skill set, will help differentiate you from other candidates, and probably provides you with the biggest opportunity for advancement whether you go to law school or not
