If he likes the facial hair, but thinks it might be too scraggly at two inches to look professional, just trim it so that it's shorter.
Only reason I still have my beard is that it does look good (actually, better) very close cropped. I will readily admit that a full, long beard will never go with being a professional for interviews, not matter how Grizzly Adams-esque it is.
If you can't grow it, don't wear it.
