That's essentially what a significant score increase would mean. You could go to this same T2 school for full tuition with a big score increase, or you could have options way higher up in the rankings. Taking a year off makes by FAR the most sense from a financial standpoint.

I have a scholly with a T2 and a WL with a few other schools, but I've personally taken the test 3 times already and have no further plans to lie to myself that 4th's the charm. But really...if you haven't been putting a whole lot of time into it...why not try seeing whether you can break the 160 barrier...and possibly 170s?

Speaking from personal experiences, I was just starting to break into the high 160s area before I took the test for my 3rd try and flopped on the LG section and came out with a low 160s. If you have to, take some time off from your work and put your back into the test. The rewards WILL pay off.

That could be. I was told by a fin-aid guy that it depended on what sector of law you were working in. I could be wrong.

As I understand it, the sector matters as far as when your debt is completely forgiven. 10 years in public interest vs. 25 in any sector.

Just curious, does public interest mean any sort of non-private job, like working at the FTC or the SEC, or something much smaller in scale?

Just FYI, you won't get a job at either of those agencies coming out of a T2 unless you're at the very top of the class. SEC, in particular, is more competitive than biglaw (mainly because of the revolving door it provides in to extremely lucrative private practice).

There is no difference between the school ranked 50 and the school ranked 150. If you can't get into a T30 or so, and you need to go to law school, go to the best one you get a full scholarship at. Also, retake.

My friend took a Kaplan course and then spent two months studying for the December LSAT. He pulled down a 154. I've been tutoring him since then, and he just practice tested at a 173 yesterday. He is not a genius. Anyone can improve if you just study correctly.

Sorry to jump in like this, but I've been reading this site for a long time and I am astonished at the douchebaggery that takes place. For someone to call this guy an "idiot" for not taking into account certain factors that may be important but that, OH MY GOD, he didn't yet take into account is ridiculous. Maybe that's why people post here, to FIND THINGS OUT. With IBR, going to a T2 at full cost is no longer the financial suicide it once was. In fact, I'd argue that unless you are abandoning an incredibly lucrative career to attend law school, a T2 is a sound financial decision. So yeah, the "lulz" are by people who ignorantly assume that your minimum loan repayments will be oppressively high (with IBR, the payments are capped), and that you'll spend your whole life chasing the loan principle. (the balance is forgiven after 25 years). As such the belittling of going to a school worse than Tx without XYZ scholarship is based on past wisdom and not compatible with the current facts. Oh, and don't take tons of private loans. That really is financial suicide!

Anyway, the more I think about it, the more I think that I made up my mind last weekend. This thread was like a nudge in the right direction, something to convince me that I was making the right decision.

But anyway, thanks for being a little sympathetic. Just in case it wasn't clear, I've pretty much decided not to go to school this fall. I called up the financial aid office today and was pretty much told that this was how it was done for first year students. The lady I spoke with was very nice and told me about appeals, but I almost wanted to call her out. I don't see how my friend who goes to the same school I was going to attend, who has a wealthier family than I do (not super rich, but almost certainly more well off than me) and who has a similar academic profile, was given money, while I was given nothing but loans. (Those loans, by the way, were largely unsubsidized, which would have only added to the cost.) And even though I have been out of school for a few years, I haven't been earning a lot. Perhaps I am taking this way too personally, but the seemingly nonchalant response from the financial aid lady irritated me. The amount of money they are indicating I should borrow is enough to buy a house in some parts of the country, yet it seemed as if nothing was done to help me. Why should I go there unless they are willing to help me?

Good luck next cycle! I understand that waiting a year can feel agonizing (I really wanted to go in fall 2010 but realized that waiting a year would give me better options), but I think it seems like the right choice for you.

I'll be attending a T2 on a pretty decent scholly. And, I'm still concerned that it will take me longer than 10 years (15yrs max) to comfortably pay off my loans. Unless you have some immunity to what I call debt depression, then feel free to borrow 200k. Though I'm not certain of the math, I'd bet that the interest on that large a principle over the span of, say, 20 years brings the total payback amount closer to 330-350k.

There are very few schools worth a 200k commitment.
