Are ATL & XOXO Commenters a Representative Sample?
I have a confession: in my time leading towards law school, I (unfortunately) have read more than a few comments written by XOXO and ATL users. Initially, my gut reaction was that they had to be nonrepresentative since I know quite a few law students and practitioners and they don't talk this way. By this I mean they don't cavalierly default to racial slurs, shock humor, and other lazy (and unfortunate) forms of expression.
Months later, I can't help but take pause: first at the content, then at the thought that educated, socially-minded people could or would even be this hateful, and, finally, whether this content is representative of the field more broadly.
To current law students: are your peers at all like these assholes?

I can only speak for NU, but definitely not. The people IRL are far more socially well adjusted, at least externally, than people on XOXO and ATL.miamiman wrote:I have a confession: in my time leading towards law school, I (unfortunately) have read more than a few comments written by XOXO and ATL users. Agree there are people like that, but they don't last long in the proffesion. Your rep gets around fast once you start to pratice and people do and will balcklist you quickly. Allready some folks from my class have a "rep" and I know its kept at least one person out of proffesional orginization that could have really helped thier carear.rayiner wrote:I can only speak for NU, but definitely not. I think people on XOXO and ATL, and to a larger extent, commentors on various blogs and newspaper websites around the web, are more representative than many of us would like to think. The anonymity of these forums allow people to express views they would not express publicly, but still hold nonetheless.
Unfortunately, people are assholes, and teh internets r serius bizniss.

This is absolutely true. I'm sure many of the people on those sites are cool in real life, some even may be your friends, many - I'm sure - are TLSers who are known and loved. Never underestimate the power of anonymity and the glib and offensive nature it fosters.TTH wrote:I think people on XOXO and ATL, and to a larger extent, commentors on various blogs and newspaper websites around the web, are more representative than many of us would like to think. I sometimes get the sense that people say things on those sites in order to be offensive, just for a change from their PC lives. Then again, perhaps this is proof-positive that I am a Pollyanna .

It's less XOXO people being weird and more TLS people being total unadulterated losers.
XOXO has had some stellar debates on that page, some very smart people and some super funny content.
TLS is never going to be at that caliber but nor should it, I suppose. Everyone here is happy with ponies and rainbows so have at it.

Yeah, horrible layout. However there is some good info mixed in with all the bullshit, and some of the stuff on there is pretty damn funny.kalvano wrote:Kilpatrick wrote:http://www.autoadmit.com/

Take all the well-intentioned naivety of TLS and violently rape it with a dose of internet lolz and anonymity.merichard87 wrote:Whats XOXO?
