Free Dorms- what would you do?

Postby RP1983 » Mon Apr 26, 2010 11:19 am

I was offered a free dorm room but plan on living off campus just because I like the privacy. However, I was wondering if I should still take the free dorm room as a place to stay if the weather is bad, or a quiet place to rest or nap during the day. It might even be good if I am drinking with people in the dorm room and need a place to stay ( I don't even know if this happens in law school like it did it college). Does this look bad if I do it. People in the dorms may think, what the hell, this kid has a dorm room and off campus housing what is his deal. What would you guys do?

Keep in mind that the LS (probably GWU if my guess is correct) will most likely use this as your official address. You would have to check your mail regularly if that is the case.

Does it have a kitchen or a cafeteria. If it has a kitchen or a free cafeteria just take it and live there. If its GWU, debt avoidance should be your middle name.

Also they may reduce your COA for loans. Meaning they won't lend you enough to live on your own.

I am apparently in the minority, but I think its a shitty thing to do and if I were administrator and found out at the very least I would think poorly of you for doing it. I'm not going to go on a morality rant here, but assuming you must be an intelligent person to have received the offer, just forget how great you are for a second and think about it. geez.

This is important. Call the admissions office to get an answer before deciding.

Actually I don't have great numbers so I am surprised. And the funny thing is, it is the administrator that suggested that I take it as place on the side to study and still live off campus. That being said, I feel somewhat like you do and don't want to come across like a D-bag to other students.

Graduate dorms are often quite nice. Usually the rooms are private and it is essentially like living in a one-bedroom apt. Have you checked out this free place that you're thinking of turning down? Other benefits include campus security, prompt repairs, proximity to class. I would give this serious consideration before embarking on an off campus apartment hunt.

This is fine I think. My parents are paying for my living expenses, and I just need loans to cover my tuition. This shouldn't be a problem should I choose it should it?

take the stipend they offer as an alternative, since the dorms are really not THAT short of a walk from the school anyway.

If the school that has offered you the free room is in fact GW, just ask them to let you use the allowance to finance an off-campus apartment. That's what I did.
