I majored in history and took a minor in political science. All the reading, writing, and research should prove valuable for law school, although I'm sure I'll be as terrified as every other 1L.

This may be obvious, but I think even Engineering majors need to bring something to the table numerically. Would Harvard rather take a 3.3 Engineering major with a minor in mathematics and a fantastic internship that proved an ability to succeed in Patent law? I'm sure. But if that 3.3 (for whatever reason) also scores a 158, he ain't getting in. A 3.7 History major who spent two years prepping and scored a 180 is (maybe, I guess). Every available piece of information seems to support this.

Now, maybe a 3.3 Engineering major with a minor in mathematics from Princeton who had a fantastic internship that proved an ability to succeed in patent law and was, miraculously, able to squeeze in enough studying that he/she also scored a 178 (or whatever) on the LSAT probably gets more consideration than a lot of people would be willing to admit. There just has to be an ability to make the numbers make sense.

On the other hand, my GPA is middling and my LSAT is unimpressive (by this communities standards) and I still got into every school I applied to, with the exception of Pepperdine (PS must have screwed me), and that list included two or three schools I was clearly out of range for (naive hope). It wasn't my major that pushed me over the top for them, I can guarantee that.

I majored in Politics & Philosophy (a special program offered by the University of Pittsburgh Honors College: 45% political science, 45% philosophy, 10% economics) and religious studies with a specialization in philosophy of religion. I didn't do a minor.

I majored in philosophy and classics, minored in political science. Don't know that this added anything to my application, but it forced me to get accustomed to reading long, dense, literary works.

I double majored: B.B.A. in Economics with a focus in econometrics and a B.A. in Political Science with a focus in I.R.
Economics is worthwhile, political science sucked ass.

Majored in Political Science with minors in history and economics. It's not original, but I wasn't aiming for originality, just something that would interest me and engage me and at which I could do well.

Edit: I also share the general consensus about business being an easy and fairly unimpressive major.

I was electrical engineering. My 3.5 was treated like a 3.5 in any other degree. Adcoms do NOT care about your major (or any graduate degrees). They care about their ranking, which is based on UGPA and LSAT... That's it. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise. I don't care what adcom you talked to; he's not being honest or he's not telling you the whole story.

The good news is that your 3.5 in EE will open many doors for IP law.

Would you consider poli sci to be more difficult than finance?

While I would agree that most business majors are not that difficult, I must say that they are certainly more difficult than poli sci, kinesiology, history, english, crim j, and quite a few others.

LOL for lumping history with kinesiology and criminal justice.

Majored in Political Science, minored in CJ and Philosophy. If I could go back and do it again, I would be an Early American Literature & History Major (my school allows you to shape your own as well) with minors in Economics and Political Science. Philosophy at my school was just way too labor-intensive for the grades I got, and I feel like I dont know didley about the economy or basic finance.

I'm not arguing that business is easier/harder than political science. I'm just pointing out that business majors get up their own assholes about how "demanding" and "difficult" their major is, despite that fact that business is a piece of cake (yes, including and sometimes especially finance). People who think that equivalent GPAs from liberal arts majors and business majors are somehow factored differently are just deluding themselves. Also, business majors and liberal arts majors just emphasize different skill sets; political science and history, for example, emphasize writing skills, research skills, and logical reasoning skills, whereas finance mainly requires good math skills. Is one of those skill sets rarer than the other, or superior? Probably not. Does a very skilled finance major have any better chance at succeeding in a political science class than a very skilled political science major has at succeeding in a finance class? No.

In short, business majors need to get over themselves.

Not all business majors are created equal. At some schools MIS is a pretty legit program. Management and Marketing are extremely easy anywhere and Finance and Accounting are somewhere in the middle.

If I could do it over again, I'd major in Basketweaving. Or business....both are equally mind-numbingly easy to get a sky high GPA. If you think your business major was rigorous and difficult, then you're truly going to get butthurt in lawl skool.

Major: Religion, Minor: Biology.

Though, I didn't do it for law school. I just did it because I liked it and later decided to go to law school.
