Nope, I'd actually like to practice law for a bit and then go back to school for a PhD later on in life. I'm only 21, so I've got my whole life ahead of me to switch careers, etc.

Just wrapped up an MA in phil. Your plan at least allows you to wait out all the old tenured profs who refuse to retire. It always makes me smile when people complain about the legal job market. The phil job market is much much worse.

That's my plan as well. I am will probably go for Religious Studies, or a hybrid between Phil and Comp Sci/AI - or what it means to be alive (since we are trying to teach AI human thought process).

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a lawyer. But my parents told me that lawyers were bad, greed-obsessed people, so I didn't do that.

I went to high school and fell in love with music-y stuff, so I decided to do this:

And then I finished college with my BM and decided that I definitely didn't want to do that because oops, you actually have to be able to sing. Oh, and music as a business is sucky and awful and kills your soul.

Then I thought I'd be a trophy wife. And then I realized that I was gay and it's not legal for me to get married in most places, so that wouldn't really work.

Now I'm back to lawyer because I really do love it. And because I feel like maybe if I can kick law ass, I can make it so that I can get married one day and fulfill my trophy-wife dream.

This. I have a passing interest in everything, but in reality, I would just love for my husband to be raking in the cash while I'm barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. Damn the need for a two income household (and that I'm not marrying for money lol).

I still just want to build robots and rocket ships. I always knew I wasn't gifted enough in math so now I'm going to do some kind of IP or tech law to try to make sure those who actually ARE inventing precursors to the U.S.S. Enterprise and such can move forward.

I always had law in the back of my mind, but I originally wanted to be a sports writer or a writer for a sitcom/talk show. I did some sports writing for a couple years but left the business when I decided to go back to school.

All you guys on here who are still kindling dreams of becoming a professional writer should shelf them and pursue law or some other career where there is some sort of a job market. The media business - especially print and radio - has been on life support for about five years now. If you think career prospects are bad in law, you should talk to a few smallish-town newspaper employees. They know their field is dying and the demand for them will eventually be dried up entirely. They just have to keep accepting furloughs and pay cuts while they try to make ends meet.

It's a shitty situation. There are a lot of talented people who could soon be destitute.

If you're serious about writing, you should start a blog or start working for Examiner.com in your spare time. Find a niche, write about what you are an expert on, promote your blog on Twitter and social media sites, and maybe you'll amass a following. The guy who runs the Third Tier Reality site pulled this off.
