Super quick question -- can you use Stafford loans to pay for housing/board if you're living in an apartment off-campus? If so, how would you go about doing that? Any insight would very appreciated! Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the stafford loan website lists what you can use it for.

Yea im very curious about this as well. I really want to avoid working my first year and my family is poor as hell so they cant take care of any of my expenses, so I was thinking I could live off of my loans for the first year. At least.

I think, and anyone can correct me, that the school you are going to attend has an estimated cost of attendance that includes things like housing, food and misc. and that you can get loans to cover 100% of these costs.

Not too sure if this is how it works, but it seems like thats the case.

If you get enough need-based aid like grants and/or scholarships to cover enough of your budget so then the rest can be covered by stafford loans then you will get the amount leftover after paying tuition refunded to you to use for whatever. But you can only borrow $20,500 annually under stafford, and you also have to not have borrowed too much in total. Limit for total stafford loan (UG + Grad) is $138k. So if after grants and scholarships you still owe more than $20,500 for tution then all your stafford loans will go toward tuition, and you need to take out Grad PLUS or private loans to cover your expenses.
