I want to do this with my dog. But she's 8 and likes having her nice big yard. And I don't like getting up at 6:30 in the morning to let her out, and then making sure I'm home every 8-10 hours to do so again.

Cat 4 sure. U can toilet train them to get rid of the nasty litter box, and then they are one of the lowest maintenance pets around! Not to mention the right breed can act just like a dog without the annoying clinging tendencies. Look for a Manx/Cymric. Mine is the light of my life...

You'll need something that makes you smile when you come home. People rarely do that.

This is a stupid question. If you love dogs, then dogs. If you love cats, then cats. Etc, etc. That said, Alligator is usually the preferred choice of pet among law school students.

i wouldn't recommend getting a dog right when school starts, but perhaps a few months before if you can take the summer off.

Puppies are wayyyy more work than i ever expected and if i wasn't working on an independent project where i set my hours and i worked from home, it would've been bad. they need to be watched 24/7. and i don't know about rescue dogs, but i'd imagine you'd want to spend a significant amount of time with your new buddy until s/he is comfortable in your home and with your rules.

... but i'd go dog.

with dog, beware: i cant go to happy hours with friends/coworkers because i have to come straight home after work and take care of dog. love dog, hate no happy hours. not so much a problem in law school, but will be after. unless you get a job that will allow you to pay for a dog walker.
