University of New Mexico Law School, advice on how to get in

Post by safoamerica1 » Sun Jan 03, 2010 10:53 pm

Hi everyone. I am from New Jersey, graduated 2008 from Rutgers, and I scored a 157 on the LSAT. That puts me near or above the 75th for New Mexico Law. Does anyone have any advice on what I should focus on on my personal statement to help me receive admission from UNM?
I think they want to see that I intend to live there after graduation, which I do.
Ok, thanks a lot, any feedback would be most appreciated.

tell them in your PS if you get in your going

edit: although this is risky because you have to be assuming they will read it.

You think with my score and desire to practice there I should be admitted? That is good to hear to say the least.
I just figured they wanted applicants to have some extreme desire and admiration for New Mexico.

Make it clear in your personal statement that you desire to live and go to school in New Mexico and that you are dedicated to attending UNM upon admission. If you have a respectable GPA you should be just fine for admission - maybe even scholarship consideration.

Or don't focus in spelling and get a decent LSAT.

Or just accept that you suck at spelling and don't look weak by making a stupid come back.

I'm applying for NM too with a 156. Non-URM.

I added a paragraph onto my PS (which talks about my experience with Domestic Violence and my goal to work as a prosecutor in the field), on how attending NM would help me to achieve it, specifying their Institute for Public Law. I also talked about how I had spent a lot of time in NM over the years and that it was the place I'd want to build my legal career.

They are tricky to predict, good luck!

I plan on applying to UNM as well. I got a 158 LSAT (plan on retaking) and will have around a 3.2 GPA. I have a strong desire to live in the Southwest and Albuquerque seems like a sweet place to live. I am a Non-URM as well but I do have an interest in Native American law...Would this be to my advantage when applying if I mentioned this in my personal statement?

I don't know what focus UNM puts on Native American law (I assume high especially with UA and ASU having a high emphasis on it as well) but if its an area the school is strong in, absolutely mention it in your PS as to why you want to attend there. Law schools like hearing specifics about why you are choosing them.

As a resident of New Mexico I also applied to the school. It is an unusual school as it is ranked in the 70s however it has a low student to faculty ratio and an unusually high rejection rate. They give a HUGE preference to minorities, particularly Hispanics, and as a White Male that is a big strike against me. If you are interested at all in Native American Law or Water Rights law be sure to include that in a personal statement, those are big issues in this state. Albq is a nice city to live in, gets warm in the summer but it gets the winters too. Good luck!
