trying to help a friend: is it better to get insurance through your school? or is it possible to get it cheaper privately?

If we are strictly talking private health insurance I think it's cheaper to do your schools plan when you add in the $0 clinic option katemckitten talks about above.

It *might* be cheaper if you can qualify for a public insurance option if your state allows (Massachusetts does but I can't speak to other states because we have progressive health care laws compared to a lot of other places) but you lose enough convenience (clinic use, payment comes from loans so you don't have to worry about it, etc) that I think it's a wash in many cases unless you're really strapped for cash.

If you're under 26, see chargers comment. Another option: get married just for the health insurance. Probably nothing will go wrong

On paper, WUSTL's plan is really good for the cost. The big caveat seems to be that you have to do your primary care at the student health center, with some exceptions. A plan with equivalent coverage would probably cost ~2 times as much on the exchange depending on age.
