Definitely in my top 3, although I'm having a hard time deciding between UK and Cincinnati.

I was originally deciding between UC, UK, OSU, and IU but have narrowed it down to OSU and UC. If you didn't attend a UC open house yet I strongly suggest it, that's if they're still having them.

Well deciding between UC and UK was easy for me, but that's for several reasons. First of which is I'm from Cincinnati so I could stay at home and save a ton of extra money in living expenses. Aside from that though I don't want to live in Kentucky, or practice there and UC's career services seemed a lot more student focused, and I liked the close knit community feel of the school. Additionally, I attended undergrad and graduate school at UC and loved it, and also fell in love with the Ohio Innocence project which I was offered a fellowship with. But, honestly both schools have impressive job placement and bar passage rates for their rankings, that of which are inline with schools towards the top of tier one.

As far as OSU and IU-B go, they both seem like great schools but since I'm from Ohio, and plan to practice here at least initially it makes a lot more sense to go to OSU than IU-B. Also, I get instate tuition rates at OSU and their job placement is higher than IU-B (which has a job placement more inline with UC). The main things making me lean towards UC over OSU are the lower student to faculty ratio, OIP, relatively similar bar passage/employment rates, more externship/internship opportunities than students, and not having to pay housing expenses since I would be living in Cincinnati.

How I decided on schools in general though is this:

1) Figure out were you want to work. Choose a school in that location, or that places in that area.
2) Figure out what you want to do. For example: If Biglaw is what you want to do, than make sure you go to a T-14 or at least T-20 school. If that's not a possibility go to whatever state flagship school you can get into and try and rank at the top of your class, and while in school take externships and internships that will make you more attractive to these firms. If PI or government work is what you want to do, find schools that place high in these areas and that will allow you to leave with little to no debt.
3) Look at employment at graduation, 10 months out, where students are getting employment, bar passage, starting salaries in relation to COL of the area and what your overall return on investment is going to be.
4) Don't worry about- law library size, things to do in the area, aesthetics of the school ect... What matters is what you will get out of the school and where you will be after graduation.

Wow, thanks for such a thoughtful reply! I would really like to work in Kentucky (or possiblyyyy Nashville eventually), so I think that UK might be a better fit for me. UC had a lot of great things to offer though, and I am not surprised that they made such a massive jump in the rankings...everyone there seems like They really want their students to be successful (obviously all schools do, but there was just something a little different about Cincinnati that I really liked).

Best of luck on your final decision!
Thanks and you too! Kentucky sounds like a good fit for you then, rumor has it their facility is getting updated too which will be much appreciated by students I'm sure.

LadyProspero wrote:From Cincinnati also (northern Kentucky). Applied to mostly T30 schools and am riding out a Cornell waitlist, but did throw a last second app to UC. You guys mind if I ask your stats/Scholly offers from UC? Just trying to gauge how generous they are with money etc. Feel free to PM.
Not at all! I'll shoot you a PM but I'll be honest it's not the best, in fact me and the dean of admissions sort of got into it. But, honestly OSU has been very stingy this year too, if you haven't seen the thread talking about it I suggest reading it too ha ha. Their tuition is very cheap though compared to most schools from the get go. It ultimately still makes the most financial sense for me due to saving 50-60k in living expenses.

Median grant amount (full-time) $6,800
Grant range (25th–75th percentile) $5,000–$12,500
Full-time students receiving grants 84.8%
Students receiving grants of more than full tuition 0.7% (I'll add that according to the dean of admissions "Their current policy is to not give out full rides, so unless he's lying I don't know where this 0.7% comes from)
Students receiving grants of full tuition 0%
Students receiving grants of one-half tuition or more but less than full 21.3%
Students receiving grants of less than one-half tuition 62.8%
(TAKEN from US NEWS 2017 BEST LAW SCHOOLS)

I'll add that I did receive more than the 75th percentile range and an additional $5,000 from the OIP fellowship. I'll PM you the details though.

I will be attending UK in the Fall. Accepted at Emory, William and Mary, Tennessee, George Mason, Pepperdine, and Cincinnati. Narrowed the field down to W&M, Tennessee, and UK early in cycle. I'm a Kentucky resident so it was ultimately the job placement stats, location, and generous scholarship on top of in-state tuition that swayed me to stay in state.

I agree but would say that's the case for really any school that's not a T20 or state flagship school. If you're really interested in big law I'd shoot for a school as high up on this list as you can get, and hope to be towards the top of the class.

SCThunder7 wrote:To go off of what y'all are saying, that dean really rubbed me the wrong way as well. I never tried to negotiate, and I'm glad I didn't now. But he was kind of rude at the ASD.

The one thing I noticed was that all 4 people on the student panel did not have jobs yet. There were two 3Ls, one 2L, and one 1L. When he asked me afterwards if I had any questions about anything, I brought that up (I would think you would choose some of your more successful students to sit on a panel, and the fact that no one had jobs 2 months short of graduation is worrying to me). He didn't know how to reply to it, literally scratches his head, told me something along the lines that I was worrying about all the wrong things, and literally walked away. It was really awkward.

My issue with Cincinnati was that I don't even really consider it to be a regional school even. I think it's more of a city school. If you want to stay in Cinci, there are so many great opportunities that the law school can offer, and I can't really imagine a better choice. However, leave Cincinnati, and I don't even think the school holds too much weight in it's own state. Ohio State grads seem to take the cake in all other parts of the state, and Case does place decently I'm Cleveland.

I really liked everyone I met st Cincinnati, besides the awkward run in with the dean. I just kind of blew it off as a one off instance, but it seems like that might be the norm with him.
I agree about the student panel. I will say though UC has the same Employment at graduation as OSU and IU all three are around 47% ( IU 47%, OSU 46%, UC 47%.) They all climb to 80% or higher at 10 months out. It is rather surprising though they choose those student, unless perhaps they volunteer to do it.
