I kind of blew off this post because the exam our professor posted for civ pro didn't actually seem that good. Now I realize it was likely just not the CALI exam answer.PeanutsNJam wrote:I saw a Cali exam answer and I know now I will never come close in this lifetime lol. The amount of work you have to put in is beyond me.
Reading through the top Ks exams our professor posts are absurd tho, how the fuck people write this much is beyond me when i'm not even spotting all the issues. It is seriously incomprehensible that people can organize their thoughts and crank out 24 pages of on point analysis. I max out at like 12 pages, doomed to be median here

As a fast typer and experienced thought->page vomiter I think I could crank out 25 pages in 4 hours, but about 10% would repeat, 20% would be off point, and about 5% straight up wouldn't make sense
we have some pretty aggressive word counts so I won't have to find out

I come home from exams, expecting a weekend of relaxation before the final one on Tuesday. Instead, I get hit with news of a gang fight in my hometown.

It's definitely possible, and people do this somewhat regularly, but it's surely exam specific. Some issue spotters really lend themselves to this kind of thing; a huge-hypo torts issue spotter might have a nearly unlimited number of issues; I mean consider a hypo with 6-8 different possible parties involved in 3-6 incidents. Under simple negligence theories alone you might have 10 pages of writing. Add the whole first year bag of torts tricks and you could theoretically write non-stop for 5 hours and still have angles you didn't cover.
Typing speed practice has to be one of the best exam-prep investments one can make; if you type quickly enough, 25 pages doesn't have to be disorganized.

what kind of a psycho gives an 8 party 6 accident hypo as a true issue spotter

I type pretty fast, I just don't think fast enough, when I know what I'm saying I can push ~60-70 wpm
Maybe I should've gone to court reporter school instead

Re: Tonight, We Dine in He1L
Well you guys should feel great, because I am apparently the most abysmally slow writer ever.
My typing speed is pretty decent as far as online typing tests go (85ish wpm), but I barely cracked 20 wpm on the test. This is gonna be a problem, fellas..
I think part of my problem is lack of detail in my answer outline. My outline tends to just be a list of the main issues I'm talking about for each person/event, so I end up formulating the specific arguments for each as I go along. I'm guessing that I should get more of the thinking done up front, so I can just bang out the words once I start typing? Any advice on this?

Re: Tonight, We Dine in He1L
Do we all use ExamSoft? On my midterm, I typed a little over 9000 chars, which came out to 5 pages + 1 sentence. I'm guessing 9000 chars is something like 1500 words, which comes out to 300 words/page (big font, double spaced when it's printed out). For my 3 hour civ pro open book, I typed 6800 words, so that should be 23 pages? I think it was mostly on-point, but I pre-phrased rules, so my rule statements were excessively verbose. I did outline vomit, but my professor said she wanted us to state the framework/rules before we apply analysis.
We had a ton of questions so it lended itself to a lot of information. 6 short answer, 2 fact patterns.
@radio I don't think that's bad at all, I mean you have to read the fact pattern and think as well. And as someone who prephrased paragraphs, I found that incredibly helpful. If there's a PJ problem, I look at my attack sheet and start transcribing for a minute or two: "The federal court may piggyback on the long-arm statute of the state and extend its jurisdictional reach to that allowed by the Constitution. [facts about how court is seeking in personam/in rem/quasi in rem] When the court is seeking to exert in rem jurisdiction over a non-resident of the state.............ETC. The standard for determining whether exerting jurisdiction over the defendant is Constitutional is set forth in Int'l Shoe, where the court held that jurisdiction is permissible when the defendant has had sufficient minimum contacts with the forum state, and it does not violate traditional notions of fair play and substantial justice."
That would go on for 2-300 words, but since I can type 120 wpm, it didn't take a lot of time, and our professor wants that so hopefully it wasn't a total waste of time.
Also prephrased individual statements to add into the analysis where appropriate or there were analogous facts, like "The court held in Burger King, where... ETC." so I didn't have to waste time recalling or formulating the sentence.

I think PNJ is probably right in almost every case. This feels like a "know thy prof" thing in a huge way though; we have a prof here who specifically stated in his exam memos (of which there were many) that usually the biggest failure on his exams occur when people go on autopilot/regurgitate, the take-away being (at least for profs with mindsets similar to his) make sure general rules are in support of, and not in lieu of, facts-specific argumentation.

My outline is 7 pages, brother; it's all about your test-taking style =) i'm sure you'll crush it; just keep on those PTs.Wahrheit wrote:How do I know if I have enough in my CivPro outline? How do I make sure I'm not missing anything? What should I do to review other than read my notes over and over / try some old tests? I feel so stupidly unprepared for this exam.
