How not to be a gunnerWahrheit wrote:Panel during orientation today could potentially be titled "How and why not to be a gunner"
Only raise your hand if it is more than a minute before the end of the class and you are:
1) asking a question that will help you understand the current material; or
2) providing an answer to the professor's current question that only references the current material.
Why not
Ain't nobody got time fo yo shit

My section has been labeled the gunner section. Exam week will be a bloodbath, I'm sure of it.
Met a 3L today who helped me out with talking exam strategy and outlining organization for Crim (allegedly got the highest grade in the class), which was pretty awesome. Hard to believe that I'm in week 6 of class.

THIS. Oh, did you work on something similar before law school so you're pretty sure XYZ minor loophole applies and would solve the whole thing? Re: You Can't Spell Lunatic Without 1L
Better tip. Don't raise your hand at all. If you have a question, write it down. Collect questions, then visit office hours and ask the professor. It serves 2 purposes.
Primary reason: Your question is probably worthless, and will be a waste of time. If it's about something you don't understand and need clarity, you'll get a more detailed and tailored response in a 1 on 1 session. You can be more bold and straight up ask "will this be on the exam?", or "Would you say the articulation of the rule from Case A is ~~this~~?"
Secondary reason: If your question is somehow the epitome of an ~inquisitive scholar's mind~, the answer to which will result in more points on your final exam, you don't want everybody else knowing your silver bullets. Although my professors negate this reason by saying if you ask something important in office hours, they'll give the same info to the whole class the next day anyway.

How to outline (for the person who hates outlining):xylocarp wrote:So who's outlining
1) use the syllabus as the major Roman numerals
2) take class notes directly into outline
3) delete excess later
4) thank me come finals when you don't have to make an entire outline from scratch
Around finals I spent the majority of my time reorganizing and structuring my outline so that it would actually be useful. I can tolorate formatting much more than just robotically copying my notes. I found that I would actually learn the material better this way also.

Actual questions about what you don't understand are totally fine. It's just that "But WHERE DO WE DRAW THE LINE???" and "What if it was a cheetah instead of a fox??" are not actual questions.PeanutsNJam wrote:Better tip. Don't raise your hand at all. Also, if you volunteer answers to profs' questions, you are much much much less likely to get cold-called.

Hard case re: gunning
If the class gives points for participation, and these points are given at the professors discretion without any firm guidelines, I'd walk the line of gunning in that class. A B+ to an A- for raising your hand once a day? I'd take that any day of the week.

Library
+Fast internet
+Office supplies like staplers, ear plugs, etc. available
+Close to my locker, so it's easy to swap textbooks
+Get to meet new and interesting people
+Comfortable chairs
+Designated quiet areas
-Sometimes gets really loud
-People can be distracting
-Have to wear clothes
Home
+Don't have to wear clothes
+Food available
+Supplements available for reference
+Easy to stay focused
+Don't have to hold in farts
-No office supplies
-Loud neighbors that suck at life
I have had really good luck with going to my first class an hour or two early if I want a quiet place for a while.

Re: You Can't Spell Lunatic Without 1L
one of my profs is already offering an outside of class outlining session where he teaches how to outline for his course specifically. Optional, but to attend you have to already made an outline so far. I think now's a good time to start outlining because I'm already starting to forget the things we discussed in class at the start of the semester.Leonardo DiCaprio wrote:supxylocarp wrote:So who's outlining

I 'borrowed' some from a clubs website that were supposed to only be for club members. And got the rest from 2/3Ls with high grades.xylocarp wrote:So who's outlining
