Depends on where you live, but generally you should have one. Public transit isn't very great/reliable. There are people who make it work, but I wouldn't do it unless you're very averse to driving for some reason.

How is Nashville for cyclists? I really love biking, and I really don't want to bring a car from WA.

Another Q (inquiring minds!) - does anybody have thoughts on whether it's a big mistake to live in the Bellevue area vs. closer to campus (but for more $$)? It seems like you get a lot more for your money but I'm not sure how impractical the 15-20 minute driving commute might end up being for a busy student.

So has candy budged for anyone on scholarship or are they completely set on no negotiations?

Does anyone know what the email is for Vanderbilt admissions? I need to withdraw but I'm not sure who to contact...nothing on their website except for specific faculty, should I be emailing the dean of admissions/associate dean?

^^^ I'm guessing that no one wants to be the first person to jump. I don't know what it will look like if everyone tries to negotiate just before the deadline. Perhaps that would put increasing pressure on Vandy to revise their policy.

General email address (admissions at law dot vanderbilt dot edu) should do.

I tried. I basically said Vandy was a top choice but (obviously) finances were a huge part of my decision-making process. I sent them info about two other offers, one higher offer from a T14 (higher cost of living), one full from a lower T20, and said that Vandy would be the most expensive factoring in the COL listed on their websites and could they do anything about it?

They sent a really nice response that boils down to: nope, we won't budge.

That might be because they don't love me or need me so much, though, and others may have more luck!

Took less than 3 days to get the response, which was nice. Please PM any specific questions you may have.

This is all very discouraging. But of course, I'm gonna have to give it a go myself. I'll try the week of the seat deposit and let ya'll know what happens.

So my acceptance said that the deadline for the seat deposit was April 1st, but I've seen posts in this thread about the 24th. Any reason for the difference?

I'm looking at mine right now and it says the 24th - I would shoot admissions an email

The piece of paper you mail in with a check, at least the one I got in the package, says it must be postmarked by April 24th.

Earlier scholarship deadline? Or were you accepted earlier in the cycle?

I spoke with a current student about what she didn't like about the school, and her answer was that there was no reliable public transportation system, if that matters to you. Which it personally doesn't to me. But it definitely seems like a car is necessary. I think all of the other students I spoke with had cars.

Yeah-- after being in the city for ASW this weekend, I definitely think a car is necessary. Not a bad thing, just something else to budget for! After living in NYC it will be refreshing not to have to be jammed into a subway car with 3294038230 other people every morning.

One of these reasons I'm excited to bring a car to law school is because of the wonderful experiences on the Chicago subway. Just tired of it after all these years. Also grocery shopping is a major pain.

So who has started to look into housing? It's still a little early to start thinking about that right?

I did a serious apartment hunting excursion while in Nashville for ASW last weekend. Looked at pretty much every neighborhood, but it seems like most places can't lock you in on something until at least May if you're moving in July-- the current tenants have to give 60 days' notice before leaving, and until then, management doesn't know what will be available. Everything immediately around the school seemed pretty pricey (and that's coming from a person who has lived in NYC for 7 years) compared to what I was expecting. My boyfriend and I are moving down together and I'm pretty sure we've settled on the Bellevue area for the first year-- it just seemed like you get so much more in terms of space and amenities for the money, and I really don't mind a 20-30 minute commute. I already do that on my way to work anyway.

Anybody else been looking?

Hey, so a similar conversation is going on in the full 2018 forum, but I thought I would post on here. I've basically decided on Vandy, but would be paying almost sticker price. For those of you who chose Vandy, what made you feel that it was worth the price? Or am I the only person paying that much? Vandy is by far my 1st choice, but I occasionally panic about the debt. I know it's a loaded question. Just wanted to throw it out there.

^^^^Obviously, it depends.

Vandy at sticker is pretty 'ballsy' though.......I think the top dudes get great short-term financial outcomes, but your access to markets starts to fall off dramatically.

Guess I should add my voice to the vandy doesn't negotiate chorus. Did get a very nice, honest email out of it.
