A bit impossible to get my dog Baxter to sit still for a photo. I'm not heading in to work until 4pm so I am dealing with Paypal and other stuff until then, thus the bed selfie.

The first and only time I've been to Canada, the Canadian border guy asks me "So where are you coming from?" and I say "Uhh, the United States" like total moron.

I'm too embarrassed to go back.

Yeah, you know how those Canucks like to gossip. The second you show up, it'll be "it's that guy!"

Thanks. That's Baxter, he's maybe 6-8. I was helping my sister-in-law out by fostering him when she had to move. That was at least 5 years ago now. Since my girl Doja passed Monday morning, I do have one other dog. She is a also a female, Bella who is not yet one. She's a large black lab mix with a small bit of red tinged hair from her mother (who belongs to the next door neighbor and is certainly not a lab).

Canadian response was obviously to apologize:

"oh sir I'm so, so sorry for the confusion, I meant where specifically?"
His eyes, bespectacled courtesy of free healthcare, pierced through my imperialist American soul as if to say, "Town is back the way you came, you filthy capitalist. Sorry."

Getting a puppy once as soon as I move! I've wanted one for ages but I've always lived in a city or with people who don't want joy in their lives so it's never been practical but now it's gonna happen and I'm so excited that I'm allowing myself to write a ridiculous run-on sentence but really I should stop now so I will!

That felt good.

I had to endure a customs inspection the first time I went into Canada, 3-4 hours of waiting for them to search my vehicle and computer. Silly buggers needed me to unlock my laptop before they could rummage through it looking for nefarious things.

Well I'm glad you feel better about yourself. Use commas next time maybe, it'll help you denigrate better.

Maybe that was unfair of me, sorry.

Not entirely sure. Any tips on a breed for a first time dog owner?

I've had some good times with border control over the years. I dated a guy in Ottawa for a while so I was flying into Canada pretty much every weekend, largely with no issues. When we broke up, I decided to go ahead that weekend with the flight I'd booked to Toronto anyway. Of course, THAT was the time that a very serious lady decided to interrogate me about the frequency of my border crossings.
Her: why do you spend so many weekends here?
Me: I've been dating a Canadian.
Her: Doesn't he ever visit you?
Me: He works for the government, it's easier for me to travel.
Her: Well are you seeing him this weekend?
Me: No.
Her: Why? Did he cancel on you?
Me: WE BROKE UP YESTERDAY OKAY?? *bursts into tears*
Her: Then why are you here?
Me: So I can drink and play board games with my friends. Can I please go do that now?? *tears*
Her: *look of horror, waves me through*

The correct answer for anyone looking for a dog, first time or tenth time, is a lab. They are the best dogs on the planet.
