Without a doubt down for this.

Also, I think it would be fun to have a draft party. My league always just does it online (not in person), and I think it's kinda lame. I will be living in a good size house, so I'm sure I'll have plenty of room if you guys are interested. A fun way to get to know each other/talk shit.

Sounds pretty great. I'll probably be outed when i inevitably draft the entire Jags starting offense though...

I'd be down. Is beer involved?

Checking into this thread. I'm coming from abroad so I won't have any furniture with me. Can anyone direct me towards furnished places? Are there any within walking distance of the Law School?

University Apartments is about 1.2 miles from the law school (about as close to "walking distance" as you'll find) and they have some furnished units.

Yeah, they emailed about setting up a financial aid interview. It was the following day after acceptance

Hmmm alright haha.

Well I guess my first question is... Is having a car an absolute must for Durham?

Second, where do most 1Ls live?

Third, if I need a car where is the best place to get a really cheap, decent used car? (budget of 5000 to 6000)

Fourth, how accurate are cost of living numbers that Duke puts out under its CoA numbers?

All of these may have been answered before here in this thread, but I literally just joined today so I am sorry if these are repetitive!

It's not an absolute must, no. Though I think a number of people will tell you that you'll enjoy your time in Durham more with a car than without. But there are many apartment complexes within walking distance to the school/public transport/uber/ and duke apparently has some kind of partnership with enterprise that they're very proud of. That said, I would probably still bring a car.

Can't speak to your second question very well as I don't know. Your third question: Craiglist. Or you can check your local newspaper for ads.

Fourth - The CoL estimates are pretty high. I think they plan for 21 or 22k/year, but you can fairly easily live off of 15 or 16k by living frugally. potentially even less.

Bortles gave good answers for #1 and #4.

For #2, the plurality, if not majority, of 1Ls live at Arium Pinnacle Ridge, with smaller communities at Garrett West and some other complexes, and the rest all over.

For #3, used car dealers and their websites, Craigslist, dukelist.duke.edu, and newspaper ads.

Thanks guys for the responses! I can already tell car/no car is going to be a big internal debate for me... :?

The Enterprise thing Bortles mentioned seems very convenient. I will have to look into that.

Is there a general area or apartment complex I should avoid if I don't want to live with undergrads?

Are there apartment complexes within walking distance to the school that many law schools also reside at?

Serett, if you don't mind my asking, I'd be interested in hearing your experience with whatever apartment you lived in during your first year.

Would not living in Pinnacle Ridge mean that I will be missing out on the social scene?

TYIA!

I actually might be selling a car once I get to Durham. PM me for details.

There's the rub about not having a car. The most walkable complexes have the most undergrads (or at least the most affordable walkable complexes do).

Are there apartment complexes within walking distance to the school that many law schools also reside at?

I don't think so. There were a handful of students among the complexes around Erwin Road, which are all walkable to one another, but it wasn't too large of a number and not in the same complex.

Serett, if you don't mind my asking, I'd be interested in hearing your experience with whatever apartment you lived in during your first year.

I actually didn't choose an apartment complex. I ended up at a townhouse rooming with a non-law grad student and loved it, and I plan on staying here all three years. I found it looking at the aforementioned DukeList, which you can also take a look at for apartments. Mine's about a 12 minute drive from campus, in SE Durham.

Would not living in Pinnacle Ridge mean that I will be missing out on the social scene?

You don't necessarily have to miss out, but it'll take more effort. I probably 'missed out' by most people's standards, but I wasn't interested to begin with. If you are, I don't think it'd be a problem. Just find a sociable group of people who will invite you whenever they plan on going out or doing something, even if you're not right at Pinnacle or wherever. Everyone has to drive (or walk if close enough) to go out, anyway, as the bar scene isn't walkable from Pinnacle, and all it takes is an invite if someone's doing something at their apartment. Wherever you live, you probably won't be more than a 10 minute drive from Pinnacle. This is again a case where not having a car would handicap your options, though.
