Well, I deposited. I'm going to start negotiating for more UCLA $$$ on Saturday while waiting for more Columbia $$$ in the meantime. Odds are, however, that I'm going to UCLA.

Interested to hear what they say. I'm going to do the same when I'm there next Wednesday.

I'll be sure to check back in. I'm optimistic about UCLA upping their offer, but I've already got a good scholarship there so it wouldn't really change things.

I was optimistic before based on convos with Dean Schwartz in NYC, but after my discussion with him at accepted students day he seems to have done a complete 180, which bothers me a great deal. I don't appreciate being deceived when it comes to money, do whatever you want to sell the place, but he straight up lied to me about something in NYC and failed to even hide that fact during discussions in LA.

What did he lie about?

Curious about this as well. Planning on placing my deposit tomorrow, and have heard conflicting things about how UCLA's offers will proceed after deposit deadline. I've heard from some that they're going to be upping offers a lot due to a weak admissions cycle, and then another source said they're going to be tight. Thoughts?

+1

Was told that if I didn't deposit, I could still check back after the date to see if seats and $ is still available. Does anyone have information about this from prior cycles?

When it says you need to deposit by 4/17, that's inclusive right? If I deposit tomorrow, I'm ok?

Deposited. Between the full-tuition scholly and the fact I want to be in LA, UCLA felt like the right choice.

My scholarship wants to be like yours when it (hopefully) grows up

I recommend a diet full of fruits, veggies, and negotiation. Soon enough you'll have a nice, strapping scholly.

That's kind of shady, but unsurprising given that I've received that vibe from UCLA admissions a few times during the admissions cycle.

Ehhhh "expect the same amount of merit aid every year" and "need aid will be reevaluated every year" are not inconsistent statements, are they now.

I mistyped. It was need aid both times. I know merit aid is the same. He was trying to make the argument that I should expect the same need every year and need+merit made them comparable to other schools. Sorry I'm doing this from a phone, and a bit distracted.

well in that case, yeah, it's shady to suggest that need aid won't vary when in fact it will

From most schools I've talked to need aid can change. If you have less need, you get less aid. The idea that it would fluctuate seems to be pretty reasonable.

Does anyone else feel like UCLA has some strange behind-the-scenes politics or something going on this year? Every other school I've dealt with so far has been cordial and open and happy to talk about money and my decision making process and stuff, but UCLA has been kind of cagey and the whole thing with them telling everyone to wait until after deposits to negotiate seems strange.

Which is why I initially tried to negate his assertion it would repeat and he again assured it should not change.

I knew that UT would grant in-state, but I didn't realize that UCLA could/would do that too?

I don't agree. They have been super nice with me about everything. I was able to re-negotiate a scholarship just this week. Dean S didn't tell me to wait.

UCLA has one of the BEST reputations in this regard actually. However allegedly they are going through some kind of a massive transaction and they still haven't picked out a new dean so maybe that's causing some problems?
