Does anyone else feel like UCLA has some strange behind-the-scenes politics or something going on this year? Every other school I've dealt with so far has been cordial and open and happy to talk about money and my decision making process and stuff, but UCLA has been kind of cagey and the whole thing with them telling everyone to wait until after deposits to negotiate seems strange.

I don't agree. They have been super nice with me about everything. I was able to re-negotiate a scholarship just this week. Dean S didn't tell me to wait.

I have to second this. UCLA has put up with my emails (my many, many emails). And they gave me a nice bump just this week as well.

From most schools I've talked to need aid can change. If you have less need, you get less aid. The idea that it would fluctuate seems to be pretty reasonable.

Which is why I initially tried to negate his assertion it would repeat and he again assured it should not change.

I knew that UT would grant in-state, but I didn't realize that UCLA could/would do that too?

Yeah. You can apply for it for your 2nd and 3rd year.

I didn't mean to imply they haven't been nice. They've been totally nice, they just don't seem as forthcoming and their admit/scholly decisions seem all over the place. Anyway, I haven't had to interact a ton so YMMV. Maybe I've just been reading to much TLS whining!

Looks like they're still gunning hard for GPA. Sad news for us splitters.

All schools (except WUSTL) play hardball when it comes to aid, regardless of niceties and manners. Don't take it personally when they seem cold or deceptive at times. You're just a set of numbers to them.

LSAC rules dictate a school cannot force you to withdraw from wait lists or pull applications from schools you haven't heard back from. I think you may only run into issues of you double deposit, though I have not seen any language from UCLA forbidding double depositing, and I would guess they should expect it considering they are not negotiating until after seat deposits.

Are you guys looking at the university housing or looking to find an apartment on your own?

I'm looking to find one on my own. Mostly because of the cost but also because there are neighborhoods I think I prefer over Westwood. You?

I'm going to stick with the university apartments my first year if I get offered a studio I think. If not, I'll look for one on my own.
