Trying not to lean too much one way or the other before visiting Yale honestly. Would love to hear others thoughts on this! Crowdsource my decision making please.

Easy on this one LC, Yale only if you want to do academia...otherwise, there's nothing you can get from Yale that you can't get from SLS.

that preftige though :p

And I think you're right, and that's what's been communicated to me by current SLS students as well.

True...what can you say about that? YLS is in a class by itself. But at least SLS doesn't get the open hate that HLS does (no one calls it a diploma mill, for example).

The no grades first semester is also very cool, especially contrasted with the quarter from hell that Stanford has waiting for you the moment you show up.

+1

The SLS 1Ls I know seem so miserable. Here's hoping not everyone feels that way.

On the other hand, I guess Yalies complain about having too few grades to show employers? But that's kind of dumb tbh

Hello! Lurking in to ask a question  .

Does anyone know someone who has been granted a two-year deferral from Stanford?

The website says that Stanford "grants a limited number of requests for one-year deferrals," which seems to suggest that it doesn't grant

two-year deferrals, but Harvard all but guarantees them so I am hoping that Stanford makes leeways for those

who must inevitably take two years off.

I appreciate your input!

Yes, I know someone who got one in the 2013 cycle who is starting this fall. I can check with him, but I think he requested one year initially, and then around this time last year asked for another year, which was granted.

It's expensive to live off campus in general, I don't know if dog friendly units are much more than cat friendly/no pets options. Rent in Palo Alto for a 1BD will run you about 2400-3000 easily. I'd recommend living in Munger (or elsewhere on campus) just for the convenience/relatively low cost and getting a dog 2L/3L year if you move off campus. Taking the Caltrain is a pretty common/convenient way to get to campus and save on rent a bit - I think apartments in Mountain View and Redwood City are usually more reasonably priced (they are still gonna shock those from low COL areas).

Not sure how many people know about this, but it can be valuable in terms of finding housing (especially over the summer when a lot of people sublet) and the personals are always a laugh.

I have a very good friend who deferred matriculation by a year at Stanford and is currently attending as a 1L without any issues. As long as you have a good reason for deferring, I'm sure the office will grant the deferral.

Just got the email invite to RSVP for ASW

Is it just me, or do all of SLS's materials have a distinctly 90s vibe to them, in terms of design?

No doubt about that, mets, but the plain jane email from Dean Magill which mentioned very specific things about my background impressed the hell out of me I have to say.

eventhough I know her assistant probably wrote it

Agreed, although the personal notes in mine were all in the first two sentences, though maybe my background is much less interesting than yours, haha.

The fact that they only make 400 offers in a cycle definitely gives them more time to do personalized materials and longer phone calls though, which is nice.

I actually haven't gotten the ASW RSVP yet but I just got the email from Dean Magill. I also just had a couple of things in the first paragraph that were tailored to me but I'm still flattered!

Mine was sorted to promotions in my gmail in case you didn't think to check there
Haha, I did but thank you! I'll just sit tight and hope I get the invite soon. I live on campus so I'll be crashing ASW regardless if I get to RSVP or not, haha.

There are very few options near Stanford that are large-dog friendly. At the very least, definitely wait until getting settled in to think about that.

For those who haven't gotten the email yet, I'm pretty sure the RSVP form for ASW is available to everyone on the admitted students website. (The right-hand box at the top that says "Attend Admit Weekend 2015" links to a page that has details and the RSVP link.)
