Wondering this too.
But I got accepted very recently.

FYI, tried to negotiate aid, got this response:
"our merit scholarship determinations are made concurrently with the offer of admission and cannot be awarded retroactively."

Columbia considers all money that isn't a named scholarship to be "need aid." I'm hoping their stance on negotiating changes once the "need-aid" packages start heading out.

Ahh right right I forgot
Also did you guys know that Columbia does their need-based award for all 3 years up front? So if something in your financial situation changes 2L they're still not going to change your award? Makes more sense if this "need-aid" is just merit aid though...

Which kinda stinks because I'm going to have a lot more "need" after I haven't been working prior year.

Hey everyone,
PSA: When I was at the ASP last week I was able to talk to someone from the financial aid staff who told me packages would not start going out until the end of March. If you have a scholarship deadline for another school (like an April 1st deadline) they said to email them and let them know so they could try to get your package to you before your deadline.

That said, the director also recommended trying to get deadline extensions at other schools because most applicants are in this boat.

My favorite part of admitted students weekend was when that girl asked Robert Scott something to the effect of, how much of the pro bono stuff is students trying to do good work for people who need help or resume padding for firm hiring.
Made me REAL excited to spend three years with her, potentially.

So I guess the TLS consensus is that if we didn't get a named scholarship with our acceptance AND if we have submitted the various components (FAFSA, Needaccess, Taxes, W2s) then we're just waiting on CLS until end of March/beginning of April?

I just called the CLS financial aid office and they told me that this is the case. They said if I have pressing scholarship deadlines I should (1) submit that paperwork for them to review (they also said they don't match but they would review the other offers) and (2) ask the other schools to extend their deadlines.

Hi everyone!
Anybody ever try to leverage an acceptance at HLS for financial aid at CLS?

Yes I'm pretty sure people have - still not sure how to do it without sounding like an ass though

Yeah, therein lies the problem. Anyone know if they have ever rescinded an offer b/c someone sounded like an ass? Also, what happens to the Hamiltons when the recipients jump ship for HYS later on in the cycle? Do they go back and give them to people they already accepted or do they give them to waitlisted applicants?

I mean, it's not like this is a surprise to them. They know they are battling with Harvard for students, and they know that if they want to take those students away from Harvard they'll have to do it with money.
Just don't be too much of an ass. Don't say "Well, Harvard is obviously a better school, but I suppose I'd stoop down to Columbia if you pay me enough." Say something like "I'm currently leaning toward Harvard, but I am still very much interested in Columbia. And blah blah blah...."
And don't try to negotiate before you have your original Columibia offer.
They're not going to rescind your offer.

Re: Columbia Class of 2018
Be polite, maybe a little apologetic, and keep it real. At the end of the day, Columbia stays in the top five year after year because they know how to play the game. This is a part of it.
Stress how impressed you were on visits/conversations. Stress how difficult a decision this is. But you've been presented with this opportunity and it would be difficult for you to pass up without more financial support from Columbia due to cost of living/specific programming/opportunity differences at HYS.
Edit: I think you want to know your worth while having some humility. More flies with honey, etc.
