Those prices are actually amazing for Chicago, especially once Comcast promo rates end (and they basically only let you see the promo rates online, not the real ones). And word for the wise: avoid AT&T DSL at all costs.

I got a package but it's essentially just the viewbook. They send everything via email. If you're nervous about having missed something, you can email or call basically anyone in the admissions or financial aid office--they're very helpful--but I will send you a specific email address via PM.

I got a package which was basically the viewbook and a letter saying congrats. It's nothing too important.

Has anyone heard/learned anything about Elements? Even if you can just direct to another post/thread that has it would be helpful. Would just like to learn a bit about it before we show up in Sept

No one can really quite describe it, I think.

You read a mix of random famous cases and some excerpts of things like Hobbes and Aristotle. You talk about the difference between formalism v. legal realism, plain language v. legislative intent, etc. It's kind of like a point-counterpoint, "this is how we should think about our legal system versus this other way of thinking about our legal system" course. You'll go from reading cases about slavery and postmaster-generals to exploding coffee urns to someone killing their grandfather for their inheritance.

It's really a crapshoot kind of course, I wouldn't worry about it.

It also varies quite a bit from professor to professor. No use worrying about it for a very long time.

Does anyone know which apartments are cat friendly (no declaw requirement)?

Going to piggyback here -- how about dog friendly?

Shoreland also (though you may not be looking at it). There are so many doggies here omg <3

Shoreland is still on the list for me. Do you know if they have a weight limit?

I don't, but I've seen a pretty wide variety of dogs so far. Doesn't hurt to ask?

Also, having lived here for almost a month, I love Shoreland.

FYI - MAC and TLC properties do not allow certain 'aggressive' breeds (or any mix containing/resembling said breeds) and apparently have a strict 40 lb weight limit. Pretty disappointing/frustrating and eliminates a big chunk of HP housing options, but thought I'd post it here in case someone else is looking for this sort of information.

I guess that's what you sign up for when you end up with a ridiculously cute rescue mutt who happens to somewhat resemble an "aggressive" breed. :)

Fortunately, there seems to be a decent number of private owners who don't care about about breed/weight so I'm pursuing that route.

The class schedule is up! The only uniform class is Crim Law which is at 11:00-12:05 every MWR. Everything else really depends on section placement...

1L Autumn Classes are:
Torts
Criminal Law
Civil Procedure
Elements of Law
Legal Research and Writing

Uhh Fennell and Strahilevitz are the two nicest professors in the entire law school. I know which option I would prefer.

Helmholz is a great professor. It's an incredibly entertaining and engaging class, and anyone should look forward to having him.

It's more what I've heard about his grading that I find intimidating.

Grades are supposedly normalized to a curve by the registrar. What small variations exist really aren't worth worrying over, especially since all of the 1L profs are fantastic!

Not everyone has the same opinion as Random Number anyways. Fwiw, I thought he was a fairly poor professor. It's about a 50/50 split on people loving or hating him. Being stuck with the same professor for 2 quarters 1L year can either be a blessing or a curse, depending on how you end up feeling about them. I'd have much preferred the instructor split, but it all just really depends on whether you like his teaching style or not.

Helmholz is honestly the best professor I have ever had in my entire academic career. Not just law school. You should be honored to have him. It might be 50/50 on him, but the 50% who dislike him are those that honestly either a.) don't like property or b.) are fragile little flowers that can't handle a professor telling them they aren't a special snowflake and just gave an incoherent answer or asked a ridiculous question. The people who like him either a.) love property and find it fascinating or b.) love it when professors are slightly rude in that traditional law school way. He's a preeminent scholar in his field and he genuinely loves teaching. He also happens to be really good at it if you embrace his style. He only ever assigns 10 or so pages to read a day, if that so you're lucky if you have him. Just spend the same time you would on another class but actually internalize the material. Also, I noticed that the same people who like Levmore like Hemholz. Probably has to do with that slightly rude, snarky personality that I just can't get enough of.
