Right - but do schools know if you withdrawn from a different school? I know they can see where you put deposits after May 15th or something like that, but not sure if they can see if/when you withdrawn from other schools...

But you have to show documentation of your scholarships. Also if they ever found out you lied about your scholarships then it would probably be bad. You guys seem like a dishonest bunch.

I don't think that is what the OP is talking about. I think the OP already got the scholarship offer from a different school (will submit that offer for negotiation w/ proof) but withdrew from that offer in the meantime, after the offer was already made..

What are you talking about. If you don't have a valid and open competing scholarship you have no bargaining power with u Chicago. So either 1) you lie by omission and imply that your competing scholarship is still keeping you from committing to u Chicago, or 2) they know it's expired and you're SOL.

What you're dancing around is that you shouldn't tell u Chicago when your competing scholarship offers expire. But you can't do that.

Yeah, I'm not seeing the distinction trying to be made here. If the offer isn't open, then you shouldn't be trying to use it to bargain. That's pretty damn dishonest.

Not at all talking about if an offer expires.. if a student withdrew, but yeah, guess I see your points.

If a student withdraws, there is no longer an offer. Unless you're trying to bargain by saying, "Well, this place I'm clearly not interested in enough to attend despite their superior offer thought I was worth this much. So, school that I actually am interested enough in to attend, you should give me more." Pretty weak position.

I missed the original post that started this tangent. I assume someone is trying to use a scholarship offer from a school from which he/she withdrew as a bargaining chip with our august institution. Is that not the fact pattern that got this whole thing started?

Just wow.

Point is that they ask for the scholarship deadline so it's all moot anyway.

Hmm..when did you guys submit/when are your deadlines? PM me if that's better. I'm thinking of sending a follow-up email since I have a deadline in a few days, hoping they'll get back to me before then?

I think they state they will review the appeals from the 20-24. So if your deadline is after that I wouldn't worry. Although you can still send one of course.

On an unrelated note, my deadline was missed so had to commit to Penn. Thanks Chicago.

Does anyone know the process and timeline by which Rubies vacated by withdrawals are disbursed?

From my letter: "We have a limited number of Rubenstein Scholarships available, and if you cannot commit to attending Chicago by April 14, we will need to offer the scholarship to another admitted student by late April."

That's all I know. Good luck!

Holy shit, major, major increase just now. I was all but ready to deposit at Harvard but now I don't know what to do.

ETA: does anyone know if Chicago will extend deadlines? I have to commit by Friday and I haven't visited yet. Sorry, kind of freaking out right now.

Congrats! I would both email and call.

echoing the above, I would reach out, telling them when the earliest you would be able to visit and ask for an extension until then.

also congrats!!

Hey I got a $75,000 scholarship award from both UChicago and NYU. I'd like to use NYU's offer to negotiate with UChicago, but I'm struggling to craft my appeal letter because UChicago's offer already seems better considering that COA at NYU is higher.

Should I just go ahead and imply that if UChicago increases my award, that would make my decision much easier, while being as polite as possible? But I can't figure out a convincing reason that I may choose NYU over UChicago with the same amount of scholarship money.

Asking for advice because I don't wanna be rude.
